I was looking for a way to use those low-yardage chunky handspun and fluffy novelty yarns in a wearable garment. Many of them don't even have enough yardage for a One Skein Wonder, and frankly, I thought that they'd be a bit bulky around the back. Solution: Knit sleeves that look like a shrug in the front, but are open in the back where they connect with a simple, but functional i-cord tie!
Size: M-XL
Materials:
76 yards of Bernat Boa and Target's Fuzzy Fur held together (can sub any "chunky" weight yarn)
I used less than one ball of Filatura Di Crosa worsted weight wool
Size US 5 circular needles
Size US 9 DPN or circular
Size US 13 straight
Gauge: Worsted - 5 st per inch on US 5, Chunky - 3 st per inch on US 13
These are meant to be a little loose, so they can pull over sleeved shirts too for additional warmth. :-)
In worsted weight and US 5, cast on 60 stitches.
Knit k2,p2 rib for 7 rows (1.5 inches)
Switch to chunky and size US 9 needles, knit garter (all knit) for 2 rows.
Switch to size US 13 needles, knit 4 more rows.
K 1, K2 tog, K to last 3, ssk, K1 - for 6 rows
K1, K2 tog, K2 tog, K to last 5, ssk, ssk, K - for 10 rows, 8 stitches remain.
Keep stiches on needle, and seam together ribbed edge and 4 rows of chunky to form sleeve.
Switch back to worsted weight and US 5 circular.
K 8 stitches, then pick up 30 stiches along one edge of chunky knitting, continuing around picking up another 30 stiches - total of 68 stitches.
Knit 2x2 rib for 4 rows, bind off loosely.
With worsted and US 9 DPN, pick up the center 4 stitches at the top of the sleeve.
K 4-stitch i-cord for 20".
Bind off and weave in ends.
Repeat for second sleeve.
