I've been crocheting for over a year now and decided I wanted to try some amigurumi.  Specifically I'm wanting to make an elephant for a friend who just had a baby.  I thought I hit the jackpot and was going to find some patterns here.  I totally agree with supporting other crafters, but I am in no position to purchase ANY of these patterns.  Cry  In short I stay at home with my 2 babies and 7 year old while my bf works to support us.  We make a lot of sacrifices to get the kids what they want and need.  Roxycraft's animals are SOOOOO cute.  If I could I would definately buy all the books and make them for my daughters.

Try this site for crochet animal patterns: http://www.bsu.edu/web/jmsutton2/cr/index-cr.html

Also, I link to some of my favorite free animal patterns on my web page:  http://craftypants.wordpress.com/tag/free-patterns/animals/

Here are two elephants:

http://www.bitchin-stitchers.com/patterns/0005/vintage1.html

Once you've made a few amigurumi, it's pretty easy to make up your own pattern. Use this pattern as a great base for the head and body. Then just experiment/use another free pattern to make the trunk and ears.

Edit: forgot to add the link to the base pattern...
