ideas for not so much yarn
«

Ive been hitting up the thrift shops lately and its wonderful how much unique yarn I am finding, only problem is there isnt much of each kind I find, I am at a loss for what to do with smaller amounts of yarn that will do this cool yarn justice. any ideas for smaller stuff?

Enough for a scarf? If not, then maybe a cell phone/ipod/pda cozy or a small purse?
Or hey, if you have really little, a cool wristband?

you could take all of the remnants together and make a striped scarf...or striped anything...

almost all of my stash is from the goodwill or other thrift stores!
That's because I was turned onto knitting by
kaffe fasset's books
. He uses a zillion different colors blending together, so small amounts work great!
some of his designs use
intarsia
. others have you make a ball, using a few yards of one color then tying on a different shade.

Knitty has patterns for finger puppets, cat toys and bath puffs, all of which need a lot of little pieces of yarn...

If you have really, really little bits, how about one of these?

In last season's Interweave, there's a pattern for turning scraps into a throw/wrap.

these were posted recently at supereggplant.com, maybe for when you don't feel like knitting "couture" and just want to do the tea cosy with irony sort of thing -
http://tankhouse.knitability.com/freepatterns/DishClothDuo.pdf
calls for cotton but some say acrylic is better for getting the grime off.
hmm...i'll probably make one soon, the scrubby at the sink is looking ratty...

hats take less yarn than scarves do. you can make a hat with earflaps with about 75g of worsted weight yarn. using 2 or three colors, that only requires small amounts of each. that's what i use most of my thrifted stash on!
or, thongs for all your friends?

I looked at a neat book the other day, I think it was called 'Simple Knits with a Twist'. There were some cute ideas for home projects that use scraps. My favorite was the rug made out of crisscrossed strips of different colored and textured yarns. I am going to attack my stash to make one!

magknits.com has a pattern for a coffee cup sleeve - you know like the cardboard ones they give you at starbucks? I think I'm going to whip up a zillion of them for xmas presents this year with all my yarn ends.

Oooh, found something else, on
this page there's a free pattern for a mitered square rug
. In the pattern, each square is stripey, so you could use teeny bits of yarn.

I absolutely LOVE these! They're on my lists of things to knit, right after a hat and a purse.

I made a beautiful scarf out of all my little scraps and it came out awesome! It's bigger and smaller in some places but pretty none the less... I will post a picture someday
