They look the same? 
The only time I saw that was someone I knew was thinking she was doing scs but was actually doing something more like a slip stitch.

got any pictures?  We should be able to trouble shoot it.  (we as in the many super talenteds we have in the group here...)

I've done a crochet pattern that looks very much like a knitted fabric.  It involves sc and chain stitches in a sort of mesh pattern where you sc into the chain from the row before.  Don't know if it could just be the pattern you're using...
