hi crafsters! im in high school and i need major help with a school project. we read Joy Luck club by Amy Tan over the summer and now we have to do a project. we have to come up with symbols from the book and make them. ((example)) my friend and her group are making a giant version of one of those little silk pouches usually for jewelry [from china town] and a giant coin. i have no idea of what my group could do, so i though some craftsters could help me out. please and THANK YOU!  Cheesy

Unluckily for you, the only Amy Tan book i read was...sheesh, sudden brain block and i cant remember the name. But it was a different one. Could you maybe post some of the symbols?

It has been years since I read it, but I remember that it was a great book.
Check out pearlriver.com.  They sell all kinds of Asian goodies, and you might find inspiration and/or materials on the site.

I read this book...a long time ago!  Can't remember all the details of the book, but I vaguely remember something about a jade pendant that was given to Jing-mei by her mom.  Perhaps you could work with Fimo or some other polymer clay to create your own jade pendant.  The Joy Luck Club movie might have several shots of the pendant and would serve as a creative reference of sorts.  Just a thought.

thanks you guys! more symbols i thought of are:
-vase on a wobbly(sp?) table
-red wedding candle
-bowl of soup
-pearl neclace
-jewelry (thin gold bangles)

and it could be anything "chinese related" she wants something "super creative" and the twist is also i need to pop poems somewhere on or in whatever i end up making. thanks.

Well, the vase idea would work if you wanted to incorporate a poem or two Smiley

Another idea, though maybe a little cheesy:  FORTUNE COOKIES!  Perhaps you could write your own fortunes, using important quotes from the book.  Sounds like a very cool project...you must have a cool teacher.

try a fortune cookie soup...a giant bowl of soup with the fortunes(or poems) floating in it. kind of like alphabet soup, or even wanton fortune soup (yellow colored water and write the poens with a sharpie on strips of paper)...even though the fortune cookie IS an american thing... the book was about mother/daughter relationships and how the daughters had some self actualized  moments about who they were because of who their mothers were and what they went thru in their yearsl, as well as a juxtaposition of how different they were because of the time they grew up in and the choises they made as women themselves.
good luck kiddo!

some research to do for yourself... read the cliff notes or watch the movie.
