So, hope chests are antiquated and anti-feminist. Yes. Anyways, I thought that since I'm starting college this year, I should start stocking up on some homewares while I still have a tiny, tiny semi-disposable income and before I sell my soul to the government to repay my loans.

What I'm planning on doing, besides doing a quilt, which is no sweat, I'd like to hand-embroider some sets of sheets.

Does anyone know if I need to do anything special? Like use a backing or something? Or can I just go nuts?

They make tear-away stabilizer that you can use to temporarily back the embroidery. It'll make for more of a, well, for lack of an appropriate synonym, stable surface to embroider. You should get it anywhere you can get embroidery supplies.
