Does anyone have any ideas how to make this?

Do you think it is crochet or knit? What makes it so gosh darn cute and nubby like that? How does one attach ears. Geehhh. Sorry, I've only made scarves before, so I have lots of questions.

It looks like a spiral of single crochet to me.  There is a cloche hat design on lion brands website that is a spiral.  The ears and eyes look like crochet circles.
Good luck.

It's hard to say for sure, but because of the texture I'm inclined to think it's crochet.  You could probably make a basic skull cap/cloche type hat (maybe like this one? http://members.aol.com/JSchlossma/cozyc.html?) and do some free form for the eyes and ears and attach them.  I think the nubbiness comes from the type of yarn used.  I made a headband/earwarmer for my sis out of this stuff: http://www.bernat.com/product.php?LGC=babycoordinates and it had a similar looking texture.
