An "open cast on" is a method of casting on such that, later on, you can go back and continue knitting in the other direction.  If you use this method on a scarf, you will end up with two ends that are casted off instead of one cast-on edge and one cast-off edge.  Did that make sense?

Anyway, there are many different ways of making an open cast on edge.

i learned to do this recently
piece of advice - if you get something daft by following the instructions, just look at the picture of what it's supposed to look like and try to make it look like that!
