is it really that short in the back?

It depends on your level of bootyliciosity.  I had a holiday frock made very similar to this pattern a few years back.  (Ironically, the year before the pattern came out.)  It was a cute little Santa Baby, kitten-with-a-whip number.  But because of the wagon I'm draggin', I had to be VERY careful about picking things up off the floor.

For a costume, I'm thinking you could wear cute ruffled 'roos to complete the effect, and modesty be damned.

Not to be a total nerd, but Strawberry Shortcake wears a RED dress, white apron & pink florally hat.

So don't stress out if you can't find pink gingham.  Also that Simplicity pattern is really easy (so far).  I'm using it for my Red Riding Hood costume.

yeah it's pretty asstactular... but the ruffle bit around the bottom you can totally rearange to cover your bum it's not too bad normally  but if you bend over... well you know.... i'm wearing ruffled panties that i really don't care if people see...

woohoo! I'm so glad I found this thread. I'm thinking of doing soemthing cute like this for Halloween... unfortunately I can't sew at all and have no sewing machine, so I'll probably have to adapt some thrift store finds. But I bow to you, women of seamstress goddess powers!

I work in a costume shop and we have that exact costume. My sister is going to be her for Halloween so she tried it on for me. It's not quite that short. It JUST covers her butt but if she plans on picking anything up off of the floor she's out of luck. And my sister has quite a booty so I think you should be okay.

Do you sew?  There can't be more than three yards of fabric in that costume.  Pick up some pink gingham and Simplicity pattern #8851, and a few hours of quality time with your sewing machine later...you're set!

thank you thank you thank you for posting this! Cheesy i was also planning to be shortcake, or maybe alice in wonderland (yes, i am still undecided), but really don't have $60 to send on a costume from the store.

and i just signed up to post this LOL. i'm not the best at sewing, but i guess i'll have to try! Smiley

Major thanks to slackferno for posting that Simplicity pattern; I used it for my own Strawberry Shortcake costume that's nearly done (to do list: sew in elastic on bloomers, handsew in snap closure for skirt, complete embroidery on apron, make muffin hat...yikes, it still seems like a lot!). This was my first creation from a pattern (plus my first zipper!), and I was shocked at how smoothly it went. I even made some modifications, including adding some length to the skirt--thanks for savin' me and my behind there, craftster gals! I also added a top panel to the apron (to be more authentic) and removed some fabric from the blouse (it was too poofy for my liking).

Also, a shout of gratitude for chrissydot, for introducing me to Sock Dreams. I ordered some of their Green Knees socks for the costume, plus a pair of thigh-high purple socks just for sheer joy. Their order was zippy, no s&h charges, and I love my socks!

Can't wait to see how the other Strawberry costumes turn out!

Which ones are sold out at SockDreams? Their site says both the opaque stocking kind and the more sock-like kind are still available. Hunt around on their site; they've tons of variety of striped socks.
