I love that pencil case! Great job.
Enthrallment, if you can wait a day or two, I will
show
you how I did the sides of the bag. (I tried to explain it in words, but I think a picture will make more sense. I will try to get that up in the next day or two. I'd do it sooner, but I have a
really
busy week ahead, and I just now learned how to post photos!)

OK, enthrallment, let's see if these pictures clear anything up... I was hoping to weave an actual mat to show you, but it looks like that's not going to happen anytime soon, so here is a reasonable facsimile:
Here is a lovely hand folding up the bottom of the purse. (You will have to do a little snipping first.) Fold that part up, and after you fold up the front and back, fold the remaining flaps in over the bottom flap to form the narrow side of the bag. That way the bottom is fairly sturdy.
The sides will not quite meet when you do this. I have just been using a single strip to cover this gap. Below is a picture of the sides of two different bags. On the left, I put the strip on the outside, and on the right, it's on the inside of the bag. I think I like it on the inside better. Ideally, the sides would meet and this would not be necessary. I'm still working on that little glitch!
I hope this helps. If it's still confusing, let me know and I will try again.

wow what a great idea! i've been holed up in my room for the past few hours trying this out.
I have an idea for the sides so that you won't need the extra strip, so i'll try and explain without it sounding too confusing
1. fold in one strip on each long side of your woven mat
2. fold the bag so that there are 2 woven strips that will make the bottom of the bag, so it basically looks like a bag but the sides still aren't done. They're folded in but there are no sides if you follow
3. ok this is where it's hard to describe. On the inside of your bag, right up close to one edge of the bottom, pick up the 1 strip 'seam' that you've made, and fold a triangle from the centre of the bottom to the inside edge of the bag. When you do this, the side should stand up straight so you should see more clearly what you're doing
4. repeat from the centre fold to the other inside edge of the bag on the same side.
5.the two edges should meet perfectly along the side of the bag
6. repeat for the other side
does this make sense?! lol
hope so.
thanks so much for the great idea!

Did you actually try this, and did it work? I
think
I may know what you mean, but I'm not sure. Any chance you could take some pictures? (I finally had to take some photos because it's so darn hard to describe this, as I'm sure you noticed when you gave it a go!)
In any case, I will try to do this for the next one and see if I can figure out what you did! Thanks.

yes i tried this and it works perfectly!
sadly i don't have a camera, but i've tried to draw out what i mean - let me know if it is still confusing...oh and also i've never put a picture on here before, so i hope this works!
So the dotted lines show where you have folded to form the bottom of the bag. You can also see that there is one strip folded in on each long side. Now, you have to take the red edge and make it meet the blue line by folding where the diagonal line is. You need to do this twice, one on each side of the centre line of the bottom of the bag.
Does this make sense?
