I work at a college also, as a staff member.  I made friends with the guys that do all the printing and they print color copies on cardstock for me really really cheap and also do all my laminating.  Professors give me books and magazines all the time.  I do take advantage of anything that people get in the mail and don't want.  I walk around the various buildings and check what they have set in the hallway for trash too.  You never know what someone will throw out!

I work at american eagle -- a clothing store in usa/canada..

it's excellent, every time the displays go down, they just get thrown out, so they're free for the taking.
when i first started working there, the displays were HUGE canvas hangups with abstract surfers and such painted on them
i snagged them and they were hanging for a while (because i'm too lazy to paint) but i think i'm going to turn them into purses and zippered pouches.
so the displays are the best sources of craftiness...

but it's also nice because we randomly find broken jewelery, ties that went with pants, etc, and we can take those as we please as well
