I eat to garden and I know there must be some craftsters on here that do too! So who wants to organize a unicorn zombie apocalypse where each person harvests some seeds from a garden, whether it be your own or your mother's or your friend's garden (just make sure to get permission first!) and dry them out?  Or if you dont know anyone with a garden you can borrow seeds for you could always buy some from the store. Then you can make your very own seed packet using this template:

It is an easy think to ship in the mail, and inexpensive too. What do you think?  Smiley

I'd eat this idea in gurgle gurgle drool or may but right now (at least where I live) most plants are dead or dying and stores don't really carry seeds anymore. Maybe where you are at it is different.

That is a wonderful idea!  Yes collecting seeds would be about now here in Texas too.
Only thing though would plants in Maine work in Texas and Texas in Maine?
Some plants I grew in Calif and Michigan - I can't grow here  Embarrassed  Too hot.

I do miss Pussy Willows and lily of the valley from Michigan.

You kown this could still work - I just like this idea - I think if we just did a bit of a on-line seach then we would know what zone our seeds would work for and label so people would know how to plant their seeds

for exp - I'm zone Zone: 7B

good site for that info
http://www.garden.org/zipzone/index.php

so if I get seeds that are only good to zone 9 insead of planting outside I could just grow them in a pot. Or if the seeds just won't work we may need to buy seeds that would work in the zone of our unicorn zombie apocalypse person. seeds are cheap - the main thing would be the packet that you would be sending them in.

What ya think?

I'm zone 4!  I still think this would be very fun, but I can't organize a unicorn zombie apocalypse yet because I have never participated in one. So if someone else wants to organize it and there are enough people that would like to join, then I'd be in!  Grin

I eat this idea! I had the best tomatoes this year, but forgot to save any seed. I do have a huge pile of luffa (aka: luffah, loofah, loofa, sponge gourd) seeds that I saved from some luffas that a co-worker sent home with my boyfriend. I could probably still harvest some cherry pepper seeds from the garden...

Oh, I am *so* in!  What a great idea. . .it could be sweet to match up partners in similar climate zones, then send "mystery" seeds with instructions. . .you'd have to wait for them to grow to see the surprise!

haha-that's a great idea! we'd just have to make sure that they weren't soemthing that could take over an entire area or anything...like mint does! haha...that would be awful! but hte surprise thing sounds cool!

My tomato plants froze last week and died. I finally got around to pulling them up on saturday and I found two hidden tomatoes still attached! One was perfectly ripe, one was still green. It made pulling up the last of the plants a lot more bearable! (it was still sad, though.)

I've been wanting an all mint lawn for years! It would smell incredible when you walked on it.

^^^I want mint like that too!!  Cool

So when should we do this? I like the mystery idea also! That would be fun! I'd like to do it right away because I like to have something to look forward to when spring comes, but it might be easier to wait. Either way I'm happy!  Grin

That is neat that you found two more - My tomatoes didn't make either - tried to grow them for fall here in Texas but had a couple of super cold morning and they are gone  Undecided  Need to get a mini hot house

Have you ever grown chocolate mint? It's wonderful!

I don't mind doing this Jan or Feb   -  even if you don't have seed saved up you should be able to start finding seeds in Feb for early planting. At least here in Texas you can.

Does anyone pot their seed up ahead of time so they are well started by spring?  If so then Jan/Feb would be the perfect time.

yeah...I sprout some seeds in the early spring/late winter so I think Jan/Feb would be good.

I haven't grown chocolate mint but now I WANT to! YUMMY!

I usually find it at the feed store around March - looked online but no seeds for chocolate mint  Undecided
They say it won't grow true from seed - but they start shipping in gurgle gurgle drool.....

they have quite a few different mints I'm thinking about

here is another that looks even better and a bit cheaper

I saw chocolate mint at the nursery last year and almost bought it--I should have!
They have all kinds of great herbs--pineapple mint, apple mint...I am so ready to start buying plants.
I really hate waiting out the cold!

As I stare out the window amidst this most recent of Nor'easters, I'm thinking of greenery, botany, and this unicorn zombie apocalypse!  Still hoping we can pull this together in the next couple months. ..
