And the best part is, it's totally wearable!  Nylon is both stretchy and quick-drying!  And I really wanted to be able to make something useful.  Anyway, here's my semi-tutorial:

Step One:  Cut the legs off of your pantyhose!
http://www.craftster.org/pictures/data/500/32014nylon-cutting.jpg

Step Two:  Cut the toes off of the legs.  (Sorry, no pic, but I think you all can follow.)

Step Three:  Cut those leg-tubes into smaller strips.  (I got 10 strips per leg, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch wide.)
http://www.craftster.org/pictures/data/500/32014nylon-stripping.jpg
http://www.craftster.org/pictures/data/500/32014nylon-strip.jpg

Step Four:  Tie those strips together!

Step Five:  Knit away!!

The cups are actually two different brands of pantyhose, hence the slight color variation.  I ended up having to buy more at the dollar store.  My fiance was afraid nude 'hose would be too see through, so I had to buy more black.

I used the waistbands as the halter strap and lower band.

Thanks for looking!!   Cheesy

Now it's a full bikini!!

thanks everyone!  I've been working away at making it a full bikini (bottoms, too), but I'm not sure they'll get done in time.  I'm doing my best, though, and will add them in if I can finish by the deadline!

I think matching bottoms would be pretty fun.  I bet they would actually hold up pretty decent in water too.  Tell me, did you attach the band with hose or a different type or string/thread/yarn?

Sati~  I kind of haphazardly sewed the pieces to the band on my sewing machine.  You can actually see just a touch of white thread here and there because that's what my machine is currently threaded with.  The whole idea finally hit me at 3am the morning entries were accepted so I've been rushing to try and get this finished.  If I had more time, I would have used black thread for sure, maybe even the hose.  I bet it would work just fine, then the project is not only unconventional knitting, but a total reconstruction, too!

Jodi~  Wish I could say I made the top, too, but I bought it at a department store (I've had it a few years).  But thanks, I love it, too!   Grin

Actually, you can't see it too well in the pictures, but the white thing on my wrist is pantyhose, too.  I was doing some swatching to see how it worked up and test stitches.  I ended up sewing it together into a tube and it actually supports my wrist really well while I'm knitting.  I never knew how useful old pantyhose could be until this challenge!!

You are brilliant!  Prep time must have taken FOREVER!

Have you tested it?  Like in the bathtub or something?

Library Queen~  I thought about testing it...haven't yet, though.  I'll throw it on in the shower tomorrow and let you know!!  I'm guessing it should work out pretty well, though.

Well, I did a lil' test run in my shower this morning.  I made sure the bikini got thoroughly soaked and....I was quite happy with the outcome!  It held its shape quite nicely, no <ahem> embarassing sagging.   Cheesy

thanks again for all the compliments!

Bladeburn~ There's no big hidden formula to it, sorry to disappoint  Undecided  I just did a regular old double knot.  Overhand double knot I guess is what it is?  I just poked all the little knotty parts to the inside to give it a smooth look outside.  Personally, I kind of liked it a little more raw looking with some of the knots/tails showing up on the outside of it, but my fiance said no.  Tongue

That is such a creative use of material.  I stopped using the full-on hose a long time ago.  Hygenically, they're bad for you.  And they never look sexy.  Now garters... those are powerful, sexy, and much much better for you.  heheh.. maybe you should wear a pair with your swimsuit for your fiance  (i've got a dirty lil mind!)

I love it!!! What I want to know is what happens to it when you wear it in the water?  I have made one out of cotton and it holds up but it gets heavy when it is wet and takes a long time to dry.
