This was just the perfect challenge for me... I've had a project that I've been meaning to work on for quite some time, but kept putting off (which is really bad, 'cause it was supposed to be a present for my dad  Embarrassed)

I was inspired to make this piece by an image of a wire crochet sculpture by Ruth Asawa which was shown at the San Jose Museum of Art (you can see it here; http://www.sjmusart.org/content/collection/highlights/sculptures/item_info.phtml?itemID=70&typeID=sculptures)  The bottom part made me think of a jellyfish... and as my dad had given me a really nice fishing reel for christmas, I thought it would be fun to send him a little something from the sea Cheesy

Anywho, here it is, my jellyfish out of water Grin

(Inside the jar I got to display it in)

(a close up of it in the jar... i like how it kinda looks like it's underwater Cheesy)

(a closer shot of the body of the jellyfish)

(a closer shot of the tentacles)

My jellyfish was crocheted using fine silver wire, and the tentacles have swarovski crystals dangling down from them... I meant to take shots of the "in-progress", but forgot my camera at work Sad

If you don't mind me asking....

What size hook did you use?
Did you have a pattern?

I love the whole thing.  It is awesome.  You are very talented.

Best I've seen so far.

Boy howdy, if I were you I wouldn't give that away!

It would be cool if you could put a light or a tea light actually inside the jellyfish, be it somewhat unsafe.

wow, I didn't expect to come home to so many great responses  Embarrassed thanks so much for all your compliments Cheesy

momwith3kids: I actually used two different hook sizes, a sz 6 for the inner body and the tentacles, and a B for the outer body... and I didn't have a pattern so much as I just kind of new what basic shapes made up the piece, and freehanded it from there Smiley

a besoin de parler: actually that's a great idea... I should see if I could make the inside big enough for a tea lite, plus space for safety sake  Grin as for giving it away, it's easier knowing that I can always make another one  Wink

It really is lovely!  I bet it shines, too.  I found that the silver wire got nicely burnished by my needles as I worked, and they just glimmer, and I bet your jellyfish is practically luminescent when the light hits it.

For the light idea:  I'd be concerned about a tealight, that'd have to be one big jellyfish.  What about making it into an electric lamp?  You can buy teeny light kits with cords that are fairly unobtrusive, and even with this very one, you could run a little light down the top into the jellyfish, then attach a hanging chain to the loop at the top of the jar, and run the cord through that, as per most hanging lamps.  I think it would be lovely.  And if you got the right kind of lights, you could even try to make it fairly changeabe, and do different colors of light bulbs, though I think a blue light would be perfectly appropriate in that use.

I, too, clicked the 'this rocks' button. This is STUNNING. In all my crafty ramblings online, I've never seen anything so crafty and artsy. Believe me, you could easily sell these in an upscale shop (especially in my area). You get my vote 100%.

I'm absolutely astonished, that is breathtaking and slightly surreal. I love it. I also really admire how smooth and even your work is. I crocheted a wire bracelet for a swap, and I wanted it to look 'piratey,' which was a good thing because I could not keep the tension even. Brilliantly done. I'd love to know how you did it - it looks like there are two 'balls' and then the tentacles are attached to those.

everytime i log on, i feel like i should say thanks again Cheesy you guys are making me blush with all the compliments  Wink

jettetheimpala: even tension comes with practice... i actually worked for a local jewelry company for about a year crocheting wire jewelry, so i've got a bit of a head-start.  as for the shaping, i basically made a small ball... except, just before closing the top end I started increasing again, turning my work so that I was going the other way. hmm... not sure if that makes sense, but it kinda works out like making two balls (one small, one large) that are connected, with one turned sort of inside-out so it's actually around the other.  and then, yes, the tentacles are attached afterwards.

maybe i should make a tutorial with pictures, might make more sense...

If you were to make a tutorial, Evilwench, I'm sure many, many people would be grateful. Although it does look like the kind of thing that takes an awful lot of practice and skill.
