Hey guys. I could have sworn there was information on here somewhere about this that I had seen before, but I can't relocate it. I mailed my first ever swap package out today, and at the post office, the dude behind the counter said that I can't get a DC number because I am sending from Canada to the US. As it was, my package was 7.50 to mail and 2 bucks for the envelope thingy I sent it in to be safe.

anyone else have this problem? I kept the receipt and the customs declaration slip for proof of mailing, but still.... Im paranoid since this is my first swap.

thoughts?

you can get them, but they're usually really expensive.  i always ask though, because on odd occasions it's only a dollar or two more, once your package is a certain weight or something.

you're not expected to get a DC when you're sending between countries though, just save your receipt. if your package doesn't arrive, you can scan it or mail it to the organizer to prove that you mailed it.

You can get a DC if you insure the package.  I usually insure mine for $10 (so I would get $10 if it got lost, that's low enough so that the recipient won't have to pay duty) - the insurance costs $1 if in Canada, $2 if to the United States.  Canada Post has never lost a package I've insured, but they have lost stuff that isn't insured.  They really hate to part with their money!

The only way to get a DC for overseas mailings is to send by air, which is the expensive part (the insurance itself is only $2).
