I found all the fabric I used for this bag at the thrift store for less than $1.50. I was so excited  Cheesy

close up of fabric

TUTORIAL:

Step 1.

This is a freehanded pattern. Just play around with it until you get the size that you like. You will need to cut more fabric later for the straps and ties, but we will get to that.

Step 2.

You have to make a hem all the way across the top of all four pieces. This gets rid of the raw edge once you're done with everything.

Step 3.

Take both pieces of the outside fabric and put them together with the right sides facing eachother and stitch where the white dotted lines are. Do the same with your inside fabric.

Once you're done sewing around the edges, turn right side out. Now you can see the shape of your bag.

Step 4.

Cut the fabric for your strap. The width should be the with of the tab on your outside fabric once it is turned right side out.

This pic just shows the size of your straps compared to the size of a pair of scissors. I didn't give a measurement, because its up to you and how you think you would like it. But, you dont have to make them long because the bag slouches, which makes the whole thing longer (just see finished pic at the top).

Step 5.
I forgot to take a pic of step five, but its simple. Just pin the straps to the tabs on your bag and sew them across.

Step 6.

Cut two small strips of fabric. These will be used for the ties for the closure of the bag.

Pin the little ties to the middle of each side. I don't really see a need to bind them first, but you can if it makes you feel better =)

Step 7.
Just put your lining inside of your bag so far, and sew all the way around the top. Just make sure you take your straight pins out when you get to your ties.

I hope everyone understood my tutorial. I tried to make it as easy to understand as possible. Its my first tute, so im sorry if its a little confusing.

Ok i LOVE this bag, and I admit, Im really new to sewing, and I made something fine last night and fell in love with tutoral today, and I tried really hard to make this bag, but between step 2 and 3 I got really confused.

So I asked my mom what heming meant, (shes supposed to be really good at sewing) and she said she wasnt sure, that it was the criss cross stitch? I dunno..

THEN, What do I do after I hem the top edges? Do I freehand hem after they been flipped out because there will be 3 slots instead of 1 if dont free hand hem...

ah Im so confused and I have everything cut out, just not able to figure out what to do next?

I feel as if Im totally missing something that I should know

I admit, I don't know how specifically I'm supposed to hem. I also admit, I'm a total newbie. If anyone could give me the quick rundown, I'd really appreciate it!!  Huh Undecided

i tried making this bag. it turned out okay, but i still need to work out a few kinks, such connecting the strap. and as you can see, my stitching looks awful. oh well, this was just a trial run, but i'm going to attempt it again.

here it is:http://a222.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/35/l_f4a47a6f21fdbc92bd8ec45c048926c5.jpg

hemming is the creation of a hem. A hem is what the little bit of "turned in" fabric is at the end of your shirt sleeves, pant legs, etc. It tucks in the raw edge of the fabric so it looks neat. This can be dome by machine or hand, running stitch, blind stitch, etc, are all fine. The purpose of hemming is to make the garment/object look more professionally finished, and to stop the fabric fraying.

I LOVE it. It's so cute! I'm probably going to make one of those this weekend so I have a fall purse for school. I'm still using the summer one because it's technically still summer. Tongue

Great tutorial and very customizable.  I'm pretty much a newbie sewer but am not having too much trouble following this.  Mine is being made of some very sweet fat quarters, so it's quite a bit smaller, but this was very easy to scale down.  Will try to get some photos later.
