Did anyone enter anything crafty into the Iowa State Fair?  I just dropped off a couple of ceramic pieces, today.  Sadly, I didn't make anything to enter into the beading competition.

I would go if i got the chance,  i guess, but what is the big deal, really?  the only stuff i go for is the photography contest, talent shows, and last year, a clay aiken concert.   hm....don't get why it's so nationally popular. Huh

A lot of people don't explore the Fair.  Thats where the good stuff is.  Off to the side of the "freebie" building, is where all of the textile arts are.  There's a room with just blue ribbon textiles, craft goods for sale, & a free Iowa food tasting on the lower level.  On the upper level, there is an huge room with handmade quilts, knitted & crocheted goods.  Such inspiration!  The cultural center, besides the photography, has stained glass, woodcarving, ceramics, china painting, beading, doll house making, among other things.  This year I was very impressed with all the handmade items, we've got some very crafty Iowans. Smiley
(Yay, I am happy, I received a 2nd & 3rd place ribbon for my ceramics.)
The ugly cake contest (in the food testing? building, next to the aquarium)  is hilarious.
The funniest thing I had on a stick was an egg (yes, the egg council was giving away hardboiled eggs on a stick.)
I don't know, I guess it depends on what you are into.  I know years ago, I didn't enjoy the fair as much as I do now.  (Although, I have no plans to ride the rides at the midway, in college I rode a ride where my head went out and hit the side of the ride 2 times.  I had to miss work for a week due to my injuries, just a week before college started up.)  People watching is the best thing, though.
My husband isn't a big fairgoer, so I usually leave him at home. Smiley

People watching is the best.  I didn't go this year but I heard they had a mullet contest.
