My SO loves the confetti cake that comes out of a box, with the little multicolored splotches in the cake mix. I make it for him anyway, since he loves it so much but it always gets my goat to make it out of a box because I'm a baking snob. Wink

I was wondering if anyone has made a confetti cake from scratch before and whether you use regular candy shapes as confetti and whether you had a problem with the confetti sinking?

I think you should get reasonable success with colored sprinkles (some may call them jimmies)... they might melt into a little blobby (i have a feeling i have done this before, but can't remember specifics) but the blobby will mostly just melt into the cake leaving the colored spots.  i do know that colored sugar will not work, but will color your entire cake...
i hope your cake turns out!!
