sounds like if you fold it in half it would be a good size or a make up bag/clutch type thing, you could cut polka dots/little hearts/stars or something out of felt and sew them on to cover up mistakes.

you need to post pictures of whatever you make.

My husband kept mine and uses it as kind of a doily under his "dish" (for wallet, keys, etc.). It's damn ugly, but he loves it. I like the idea of framing a first piece!

KEEP IT FOR SURE!  I am so sad i tossed my first knitted...um...thin gie.  if you are practicing different swatches, you could keep em all and sew them into an afghan, maybe embroider a number on it (1 for your first, 2 for your second, etc) so you can see your progress.  that would be kind of fun i think!  i wish like heck i had done something like that.  you have great foresight!  i just thought "eek this thing is ugly i'm pitching it!".

Yeah. That would be cool. Or maybe a knitting timeline scarf. Keep that one, and write down the date you made it, then every month or so make another one showing off your new skills. like, showing when you learn stockinette or ribbing or intarsia in the order that you made them. yay! My first knit... thing... was a pickle. a little flat pickle. I wonder what happened to it?

it's the default DVD that comes in the Knit This projects from Target.  Really terrific DVD, though the music sounds like really horrible cheap 70s porn (not that I watch really horrible cheap 70s porn, just...oh bah).  It was totally worth it, and they show everything from terrific angles so you can pause and rewind and be sure your fingers, yarn, and needles are EXACTLY in the same place

I totally need to get that. I "learned" how to knit from a book about 3 years ago, then I was up at my cousins watching Knitty Gritty on DIY OnDemand when I discovered I'd been PERLING the whole time I thought I'd been KNITTING. *shakes her head and chuckles* Now I'm all keen to learn what to really do! No wonder all the patterns I'd looked at and tried turned out wonky...

That is SUCH a great idea. I've only really knit two things, well, see above about the perling, but they were both scarves. The first, treasured by my little sister to this day. The second....well....l ong story, but I weep for the hours spent laboring on that one and what the owner did to it...

Why not use it as ...a wash cloth? Well..works for cotton.
Maybe an embellishment to a jeans jacket, learn to embroider on the swatches, and attatch them to pillows . Sew one to a backpack. fold it in half and sew the sides together, and make fingerless gloves or ankle warmers. Fold it and sew sides and one end for a glasses case..maybe too big for that. Join them to make pillows, placemats, afghans...etc..
Add a boarder ( crochet) and donate to a neonatal intensive care unit. They need tiny blankets to keep preemies warm.
