I'm sorta new to sewing, but I would love a shirt with a mandarin collar.  I've found a few patterns, but I was wondering if anyone could reccommend a pattern that is pretty easy.  I'd feel a bit beter if I know someone has tried it before.

I've done the long sleeved view on Simplicity 5098 and it was really straightforward. I did it with some nice Asian-inspired cotton and I get compliments on it every time I wear it. Smiley The mandarin collar wasn't nearly as complicated as the ones on men's dress shirts, and in fact, it made doing the latter easier later (say that five times fast!).

ahh, here it is:

(back view & collar detail)

I've got some green bamboo fabric and some dark green silk to make the view with the diamond cutout but I just haven't gotten around to it yet!

Oh, I love that one, and what great sleeves!  How long did it take you to make it?

http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M4381.htm is pretty easy and has a snug fit that I liked. I only made the sleeveless version, however, and I read that the sleeves are a bit too snug. The collar also stands up straight at the back of the neck instead of hugging the neck. Overall, I liked this pattern.

we used to convert to  mandarin collars by leaving off the collar part (any "traditional" collar style that has the neck band piece and the collar piece)
you just sew the neck band facing piece together with the neck band piece where you would have attached the collar piece.

hope that makes sense. Undecided
