fig. 1; the subject in question

I've had these shoes for a couple years, now. I had to buy them for part of a costume for Little Shop of Horrors, and after that I never used them again because they are SO INCREDIBLY UGLY. [see fig. 2]

fig.2; the hideous shoes.

I don't want to just throw them out, because they cost me $25, and $25 for part of a costume is rather unreasonable, so I'd like to try and make them awesome so I can get some use out of them.

I'd really like to do something groovy with these shoes and make them wearable!
Anybody have any ideas that could save these shoes?

all good idea, but what on earth would I paint these with?
I tried with a paint I have that says it works on "most fabrics, leather, paper, wood, clay, canvas, etc.", and it started peeling off.
the shoes are leather, not canvas, so it makes it a lot harder to do things with them

I think it would be cool to make these look like saddle shoes (in other words, just put some black "panels" in the middle). If paint wouldn't work, you could try gluing on some felt or vinyl, or some other fabric (vinyl would be good, 'cause it wouldn't unravel, and it would be durable)

But then, not everyone loves saddle shoes as much as I do! lol Smiley

You could buy some leather dye and use that to paint them.

Have you tried acrylic paint? It's cheap, plastic based paint--- it comes in a bagillion colors and you shouldn't have any problem with running or fading. Although if you cake it on too thick it will crack, other than that it's great, I use it to paint everything from canvas to wood (doesn't work too well on plastic though)

K So here's what I did with them:

That's only pictures of one shoe, because that's all I had finished at the time. For those who don't recognize the characters, that would be Michaelangelo and Donatello, two of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The other shoe has Leonardo and Raphael on it.

I used acrylic paint and also permanent markers. Unfortunately, when I wore them, the paint cracked and peeled, and now Michaelangelo has completely lost the top part of his head, and Donatello has no mouth =(

repaint and cover with soem sort of polyurethane. it smells, so watch out. but that should keep them from cracking.

I second that. Polyurethane is your friend. I polyurethane all my acrylic, maybe i should have said that in my post  Embarrassed

The shoes are really awesome though!
