I haven't used a sewing machine in literally years -- the last time I paid attention to it was in fifth grade, when I had home ec (I'm in twelfth now!). I joined Craftster to lurk in the knitting forums, but I came across this and it looked so awesome I just *had* to try it. What did I have to lose but a couple dollars of material and some ugly old ties?

Despite my lacking talents in the sewing department, I still managed to put this together in one weekend thanks to this lovely, lovely tutorial. I modified the flap to be larger, used a button instead of a magnetic clasp, and added some pockets -- but making this was so fun and easy!

Thanks so much for the awesome tutorial. I think this is going to be my favorite bag for a very long time.

Hey listen, I know this reply is a bit late, but I HAD to comment. I saw your recent post of the necktie belt and decided to stalk you, lol. This bag is simply fabulous! It's worth being back at the top of the list. It's an oldie but a GOODIE!  LOVE IT!!!

Thanks Clara,  As far as I'm concerned, neckties never go out of style....

I was so excited to find this post!  My mom just sent me a bunch of my late father's ties and I was looking for something special to do with them.  My first project was tie pillows and then I went to the Op Shop to get a bunch of "practice" ties.  I started the bag tonight and was amazed at how easy it is so far!  And this is only the second thing I've sewn since my pillows.  I'm pretty sure that if I can do it, anyone can do it!  Thanks for the fantastic tutorial and all the pictures - very clear and easy to follow!

(You can look at my craftster gallery for pictures of my necktie pillows)

To Rickrackruby - thank you so much for this tutorial! I really loved the bag when I saw it and am so happy to now have my own!

I went with a patriotic red, white and blue theme...the ties are striped, paisley, geometric, etc. (I knew I'd barely get it done in time for the Fourth of July  Grin )
Here is the front:

Here is the button (my first attempt at fusing shrinkydinks...it says '1776' at the bottom):

The back of the bag:

The lining - I did it a little different because I wanted another pocket. I took the length from a tie I used on the main panels and gave the lining a facing and did a full lining. The fabric I used on the pocket is from a bandana I found at HobbyLobby.

Here is the extra pocket I added. When it's zipped up, you can't tell it's there and the tag covers the zipper pull (see my name there on the tag? right between 'justice' and 'freedom'  Grin ).

And here's the gratuitous "stuffed full" shot. I'm finished with school, so this bag probably won't be carrying 20lbs of texts, just some summer reading materials and sewing projects....but, it's BIG! Yay!

Thanks again, R3! Great tute!

I love this tutorial!!!  Thank you SO MUCH for posting it! Smiley

Here's my bag:

I used faux suede for the gusset, strap and lining.  I love the way it looks and feels, but my machine was not happy sewing through all those layers!  I also experimented with rings to attach the strap and I love the look!

Thanks again for such an awesome tutorial - this is about one of the first things I've made and it was really easy and clear!
