Leah,
When looking at a list of unread posts, it would be helpful if the category subtopics were uniquely identified.

For example, you might see "Please Help me!!!" in Discussion and Questions and think, "Gee, I'd like to help!  Wonder what the problem is?"  But after clicking on the message you find out they need help with Quilting (which you know nothing about) while you were hoping it was Purses, Bags, Wallets (where you know a thing or two.)  So you backpage to the list and carry on without posting anything at all.  At the end of the day, NellyNewbie is wondering why 25 people looked at her post and no one made a single comment.

Many categories have the common subtopics Completed Projects (or Completed Projects: General and Completed Projects: Reconstructed) and Discussion and Questions.  Because of this, without looking at the post it is impossible to tell a post from Clothing from one in Purses, Bags, Wallets from one in Trinkets and Jewelry from one in Paper Crafts, Journal & Book Making from one in Bath and Beauty, or Knitting, or Crochet,or Embroidery, Cross-stitch, Needlepoint, or Quilting, or Toys, Dolls and Playthings, or Discussion and Questions in More Art, Less Craft.

If folks are better able to tell the category of a post it would cut down on the load on the system by decreasing the amount of processing (e.g. folks wouldn't be clicking on threads only to realize they aren't interested and then clicking back to the unread list.)  Or is it just me that ends up doing this kind of thrashing about?

Thank you fidget, I have been trying to put this exact idea into words for a long time with no luck.
I think it would help things quite a bit.

You're welcome, ilovepaper; it's been niggling at me for a while, too.   With the recent software update and concern about response time it seems that this may be a way to make a difference while not having to make drastic changes.  This is just a hunch, mind you, because I am not familiar with the actual software in use.

I click on things all the time to find out I can't help because it's in crocheting or quilting or something.  I think having the category and the subtopic would help alot.

I'm bumping this back to the top in case Leah missed it the first go-round.  She's fixing all sorts of cool things and it would be great to get this one in the queue.
