Hey Smarmyclothes...if you don't mind me asking, what is the sugar skull made of? I recognize the mold...I have the same one, but I'm just curious what materials you used.

original sculpey.  i bought a big 2 lb chunk of it, because i wanted to make a bunch of polymer suger skulls, but i've been having a lot of trouble with the clay sticking in the mold.

Have you tried dusting the mold with corn starch? That might help.

Or, pop it in the freezer for about 10 minutes. That might harden it enough to pop out.

Its so shiny it looks like fresh icing!

i will definitely try your suggestions.  the only thing i tried was spraying the mold with cooking spray... not exactly helpful.  kind of messy and gross.

i put a coat of modpodge on it and then a coat of krylon's "triple thick glaze".  that stuff is awesome.

i actually did another little box and decorated it more like a traditional sugar skull and gave it to my mom for her birthday, but i totally forgot to get a picture.  doh!

smarmyclothes- if its one of those thin clear plastic molds like they make for candies, usually all you need to do is take a damp cloth and wipe it inside the mold, just so its lightly wet. this will help the sculpey from sticking, or at least it did for me when i used sculpy with candy molds. also, you totally ROCK! i love everything you made for blueblythe <3 i can't decide which i'd like to break into her house to steal most i know where you live blueblythe, teehee! anyway i'm rambling now...

thanks for the compliments and the sculpey-unsticking ideas!  i was really disappointed when they kept getting stuck- they were all deformed and blobby when i pulled them out. i thought i might have to abandon my plans of making non-edible sugar skulls to glue all over the place, but i can't wait to try it again!
