I consider myself an intermediate crocheter but i've only ever made a couple of patterns myself (small things) and since this was a gift and larger in scale I went ahead and bought a pattern for the scarf.  But as I was making it I realized I could have totally made the pattern myself.  I should have more confidence!

Ah ha, I see. As a novice crochetter who doesn't quite read patterns, I thought it looked figure-out-able-ish. It would have taken some doing to get all the details sorted out though. A pattern likely saved loads of trial & error & frustration. It looks awesome, the colours are really great.
