I like big quilts and I cannot lie!

This is a quilt I made for my cousin's first baby, due any week now!  Because my cousin lives in Bali, Indonesia, and I knew that I was going to be dog-sitting for my aunt while she goes out to be there for the birth, I had to get it done promptly so that I could ask her to take it out there for me!  The design had been sitting on my laptop for some time, but I was quite nervous about starting it because it's quite fiddly and I wasn't sure how to begin.  Turns out, leaving it until the last minute and then piecing the whole thing in a mad rush in the space of about three days did the trick, lol!  Cheesy

The back is some Marvel fabric I found while shopping at the Sewing For Pleasure show in Birmingham:

The whole thing is partly conventionally pieced and partly foundation pieced (mostly anything with a pointy roof), and the bat symbol is machine-appliqued on top.  In the end, I started by piecing a lot of the HSTs for the sky because I wanted to get the gradient looking right before I fitted the buildings in, and this was definitely the right way to do it.  Initially I started with six different grey fabrics for the buildings, but quickly decided I needed more variety and threw in some extras from stash (I honestly didn't realise just how many grey fabrics I owned until now), and I chose to use some metallic fabrics to make the buildings look more sci-fi and city-ish.  It's mostly quilted with organic straight lines (some lines may be more organic than others!), using different shades of grey on the buildings and dark blue on the sky.  The top of the sky went a bit defiantly wrinkly and puckered in a most unmannerly way, but mostly it went really well and I was happy with the overall look.

Random pics:

There are certainly things I'd change if I took leave of my senses and decided to make another of these, but in general I was surprised at how well it went together, given that I alternated between a highly sketchy cutting list and squinting at my laptop during piecing.  Mistakes were made, have no doubt about that!  But it all came together in the end.  Smiley

This is amazing! What a lucky baby. I rocked it. Now if only I knew the person in charge of quilting board features... Cheesy

This is so massively awesome. Did you make the pattern yourself? Or did you get it from somewhere. I might have to make this for my first grandchild. My daughter is obsessed with Batman.
