I've never made one, but here are some simple patterns that might tickle your fancy:

V-neck crocheted vest
Crocheted Tennis Vest
Adventuring Sage Cable Vest

Even though the last one is meant for a man, I really like it the best of the three.  The other two can easily be made to suit anyone's tastes.

What kind of vest are you looking for?  One that you pull over your head or one that buttons up the front?  For ones that button up the front, take a look at Crochet Pattern Central to see what there is online in the way of vests.

wow, thanks! these are great! i'm looking for women's v-neck pullover styles (especially argyle, if i can find some). you wouldn't believe how hard it is to find nice men's style vests for women in the stores!

being unable to find any vests is seriously making me want to learn to knit (not to mention all the great projects on knitty)
