Very funny thread.
I have nothing much to add as I'm a new sewer, but some of those feel familiar already, especially the bobbin running out of thread half way through the material.
What I will say is that my sewing machine just broke completely the other day, and luckily I found a great man to fix it today. A sewing machine repair man is worth his weight in gold.

I bought myself a machine last year and am slowly teaching myself to sew. I recently got 3 new presser feet for my machine and LOVE them..walking foot, rolled hem foot (WOW) and a foot w/a 1/4 guide. I bought a ruffler foot a few months ago and it's pretty darned handy too!

I've been sewing for years. And I just got a magnetic pin cushion for Christmas. It's been the most helpful thing to have around while sewing.

Hi all
Please can someone advise me of what tools and products a begineer should have in there sewing box?
Im thinking of things for reconstructing items too.
Thanks
Hello Everyone.
I know that this post is an old one but for any people reading this it can help them.
The basic tools that i would use to start sewing with are:
1. A pair of paper scissors for pattern construction only
2. A pair of scissors for cutting fabric only (if you use fabric scissors for cutting paper they can become blunt so keep your scissore for specific uses).
3. Two pairs of small embroidery scissors for cutting your threads after you heve sewn a part of the garment before pressing, always keep one pair by the sewing machine and the other by your ironing board, its easier that way.
4. A pack of hand sewing needles.
5. A sleeve board.
6. 2 unpickers or seam rippers, again the same reason as the small scissors.
7. Lots of pins, keep them in 2 small bowls or pin cushions, again the same reason as the small scissors.
8. A good steam iron.
9. A nice wide ironing board.
I hope that this helps you all, Happy sewing.

and a useful trick for keeping your scissors for fabric only, is to tie a scrap of fabric around one of the handles..it helps to remind you that it is fabric only.

I find my sticky lint roller to be best esp when after seam ripping. Just roll it along all those loose threads a few times and WHAM easy clean up!

It's probably been said before... but I could never ever ever live without my seam ripper. I have two, just in case I lose the other

Inspired by other members of the sewing blogosphere, I’ve dived straight in the deep end and abstained from buying any ready-made clothing until July 2012. It looks like I’ll be window shopping for quite some time… Check out my progress here:

I find that a small basket to hold things I use all the time for sewing has been my favorite sewing essential..what is in the basket:
seam ripper
small adjustable ruler
extra sewing machine needles
a few bobbins filled with black and white thread
a spool of white and a spool of black thread
thread clippers
small scissors
chopstick to poke out corners
retractable tape measure
a bag of MM's
When I travel, I throw in my big scissors, my rotary cutter, my huge tape measure, a cutting board, my magnetic pin holder, my pincushion loaded with needles, and along with my emergency iron, which stays in my car, I am ready to go sew anywhere! oh--and my sewing machine!
l love your blog challenge, lenarrrd---very humbling and true for me as well...hmmm---a year of only sewn clothes...I admire you!

I am a gadget hog! I have to try everything. My favorites right now are the Fasturn tool and a lighted seam ripper.
