i was sitting at the movie thinking, "i have to start a topic about this on craftster!" glad i'm not the only person who was preoccupied with all of the knit/crochet in the movie. my cousin's 5-year-old triplets simply weren't interested in the afghans and sweaters.

(BTW, Charlie Bucket's father is played by Noah Taylor, who starred in one of the most beautiful coming-of-age movies ever made, "Flirting," by John Duigan.)

oh my! i LOVE the movie "Flirting". i saw it on TV and i fell in love with Noah Taylor! i was so excited to see him in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

i also loved seeing all the knit and crochet stuff! the crazy grandma was so sweet. i loved her!

I've also seen that old guy in Waking Ned Divine. It's a hilarious Irish movie I think...

I'm normally not a fan of children's knitwear, but I loved the fair-isle sweater that Charlie wore. I'm too timid to attempt color knitting, but that sweater makes me want to learn.

that the buckets were a big knit-wear family and all the other families were shiny and polished says something about the archetypal significance of knitting = love... you know?

I agree-I love this classic story because I study consumption, class and wealth and it has so much to say about modern consumer culture. I do think that in an age of mass production knitting is an expression of love.

I biked to go see this film and didn't bring any knitting, and I was anxious that I'd suffer from itchy fingers, but I was fine! The feast of knitting was just great. I even liked the crochet hat that Grandma Georgina wore. I think I spotted a pink version of the Pinecone scarf from Interweave (half of a feather and fan) and Grandpa George's coat was very Elizabeth Zimmerman.

My last thought is that if you rinsed the soot and dirt from the Bucket's clothing, it'd look a lot like the Anthropologie/Rowan clothes we all covet. Check it out:

saw the movie on my birthday, which just so happened to be opening day. i was a bit creeped out by it. being a movie geek (who's starving to death for a good movie in this summer of mostly bad movies) i should go see it again. heck, being a knitting geek, i should go see it again. but yeah, it was creepy. almost to the point of mentally scarring. Cheesy

and i second the idea of having a companion knitting book, or at least a handful of knitting patterns, especially charlie's mom's sweater and fingerless gloves (bundled in the same pattern).

and yay for crocheting in movies! this is the second move i saw this summer where someone was crocheting (the other was crash, where a woman was crocheting on a bus.

Oh, what about including a few of the patterns on the DVD when it comes out?  Don't you think that would boost sales?  Anyone out there in Craftsterland have a connnection to Tim Burton?
