Extreme newbie question about cross stitch patterns

So I have a cross stitch pattern and my fabric...am I just supposed to look at my pattern and follow it when I'm crosstitching?  Or do I like transfer it in some way....ah I know this is so simple I just want to make sure I'm doing it the right way!!!

Generally you just look at your pattern and follow it counting the stitches so you don't mess up.  In most cases the patterns are not even to scale so it's hard to transfer them onto the fabric.

Sara, what you do is find the center point of your design, and mark it so you can see it.  Now fold your fabric and find it's centerpoint.  This way, you can make sure the design is evenly centered.  Start stitching at the center and work your way out.  It's like doing a puzzle.  Have fun!!

A quick tip:  When working from the center, try to find the closest objects to the starting point.  After a while you get enough done that you can count to any spot, at which point I like to finsih a colour.  (Except for outlining.)  I have friends that just build as they go though, it's up to you.  I personally think it's easier to work with one colour/symbol as long as possible.
