My sister's first baby is due.... kind of any second now.  Cheesy  I already made them a stealth changing mat, and decided to make this baby quilt too.  All the fabrics (except the background and backing) are batiks that I've collected here and there.  I used a wonky star design and did echo quilting and a FMQ five-point star on the stars with variegated thread and stipple quilting with metallic threads in the "negative spaces" between them.

I'm especially pleased with how the metallic thread came out.  The last time I tried it, I couldn't go more than an inch without the thread stripping or making a huge bird's nest.  So I got my machine serviced (it was actually quite sick, bless it) and bought some proper needles for metallic threads and OH!  The difference!  It was AMAZING.  I love quilting with metallic thread now.  Smiley  Although, every time I quilt now (especially FMQ) I start up an Arya Stark-like mantra of desired qualities for my dream sewing machine:  Auto needle up/down.  Extension table.  (Or drop-in table, I don't mind!)  Bigger throat space.  Speed regulator.  Auto stitch-locking system.  A sewing table that doesn't share a resonance frequency with the optimum sewing speed for FMQ...  XD

One thing I am very nervous about is how this thing will wash, however.  During construction I accidentally spilled herb tea on a one square (not used in the finished quilt) and the batik leaked an alarming amount of dye onto the background fabric.  Given it'll have to be washed if it has ANYthing to do with a small child, I currently have it in the washing machine on a wool wash at 30oC with a small amount of detergent and 3(!) colour catchers and I'm praying quite a lot...

ETA:  IT WORKED!  IT WORKED!  OMFG, IT WORKED!  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy  I am SO relieved right now, lol!  ^_^;  I'll probably give my sis the rest of that box of colour catchers, though, so that she won't have to worry about dye for quite a few washes to come, and that'll hopefully get them past the dangerous "leaky dye" period.  *mops brow*

This is so beautiful! I love the batiks and star designs. Good job on fixing the color fastness before handing it over. That would have been quite sad.

Thank you both!  Smiley  I am so pleased with how this one came out.  And yes, there would have been some serious tears before bedtime if my laundry experiment earlier hadn't worked!  Shocked

Beautiful, not only are your colours great but your placement of them is wonderful, you have a great eye for light and dark and colour.  Right fabrics, great technique and fabulous artistic eye.

*blushes*  Thank you all!  Smiley  I'm on tenterhooks now waiting to hear if my sis is having her baby - she doesn't know anything at all about this quilt.  Smiley

How beautiful!  It would look great as a wall hanging, too.  Your quilting is perfect.  Love everything about this.
