I graduated from UWM a couple years ago... one place you might want to start is the arts & crafts studio. they have a lot of resources there, and as i remember it's either free or very cheap for students.

im not a uwm student, im still in highschool, but im in the area, if youre a knitter i know that there used to be a knitting group at the LGBT center on campus ((a friend of mine is a freshmen there this year and was talking about going)) otherwise right in between west allis and brookfield there is a knitting group that meets on thursday nights at 6.30 at the panera bread on greenfield ave ((hwy 59)) near mooreland road.  otherwise check out broad vocabulary on knickknick...they have a "femiknits" group that meets the first thursday and third sunday of every month...there are knitting and spinning guilds for milwaukee, i dont know about other crafts, but stuff like scrapbooking there is probably something, there is a scrap book shop that i think does something in the shopping center at sunnyslope and greenfield...but i dunno, not a scrapbooker.  um...other crafts might take more searching, but those are the prevalent things in most places. otherwise talk to like the student activities coordinator on campus, she//he might know something more.
