Here's the gallery!

Link to original thread

Sendouts October 20, 2014

This is not a traditional gallery, we will be posting pics of what we make, not of what we receive.  Please claim a spot.

Everyone please make one post that will be your personal gallery post that you will keep adding your pics to as you make blocks for your partners.  After everyone has a gallery, then we can start chatting about what is posted, just so we have all of the galleries at the beginning, k? I'll let you know when all the galleries are ready.   All are here and I hope I got the mistake fixed (sorry Homerof2)

I will link up the names with their gallery once everyone is here!

thanks for taking part in this round

well and wonderment
carol

carolmb - your city/state/country theme
A Dala horse, a type of toy from the 1800's or so that's now most commonly sold as decoration. Many think of it as a symbol for Sweden in general, but it's really from the province of Dalarna. They mined for iron there, had mining horses and made red ocra paint from iron, that's still considered a traditional wooden-house-paint.

The Lappish Gate, in Abisko National Park. The name is related to a less-pc-version of the name for the Sami people, "Lapp", which is believed to be an old finnish word for "The other". The Sami live in northern sweden, norway and finland, and have their own governmental council, though they're subjected to laws of the country they're in. They're the only people allowed to keep reindeer as livestock, which they herd into the mountains in summer, and down to the coast in winter, roaming free other than that.
Abisko national park is a common hiking area, alpine and fairly easy to walk.

The most important part of swedish culture. Fika. Roll Eyes It's sort of like "have a coffee", but the focus is on the pastries, with the group name "fikabrd" (fika bread). What you drink isn't important, but it's usually coffee or tea, lemonade or milk for kids. In a stretch you could fika a sandwich and some tea, definitely if it's a jam sandwich, but mostly you'll have a bun or possibly a danish or donut. You could have cheesecake or sweet pie, though slices of birthday cakes is a bit over the top for fika. Traditionally you have fika break at ten or three each day, sometimes both. Though it's not that frequent in the city (it's not too healthy, and most of us have office jobs!), but we often have at least weekly fika at work, either at the cost of the employer (usually cheap bun-braids) or organized by the employees. If not, people will usually take some fika at home Smiley

kbrison - quilter's choice of paper piecing, rainbow colors, white background if applicable

cursive_queen - ribbon star in halloween fabrics (f.ex orange, black, purple, green colors when in doubt)

emisaurus - broken herringbone with white spaces, in navy blue and cold/pale greens
(none of my cameras were able to interpret these colors)

every year in our town we have an eggplant festival.
we don't actually grow eggplant here... all the good vegetables were already taken.

Is this it? Yes, yes, I think it is! This is my spot.  Grin

Group 1
Sloth003 - block 1 & block 3

Stellou - Friendship Star blocks

Sparkledust - Anvil blocks  Even though two of the blocks look blue, I promise they're really purple. I had hoped that photographing them outdoors would give true colors, but guess the problem is with my camera rather than the lighting.

Alwaysinmyroom - Garden Fence blocks

Group 2
Carolmb - Road to Oklahoma blocks. My paternal grandmother was born in Indian Territories, which became eastern Oklahoma, the first member of her family not to be born in France. My paternal grandfather immigrated here from Italy. My maternal grandfather came from St. Louis but his mother came from Bohemia. My maternal grandmother was born in Texas, but her ancestry traces back to Scotland, Ireland, Wales, a co-author of the Declaration of Independence, and a signer of that document. So the Road to Oklahoma block truly does represent the paths my family took to arrive here. The background looks like dust swirls, which reminds me of the Dust Bowl that ravaged western Oklahoma in the 1920s and 30s. The green represents our trees and grasslands. Oklahoma is home to one of the largest and last untouched grassland prairies left in the US and my part of the state is referred to as Green Country.

Melladh - cats

Cursive_Queen - Halloween stars

Emisaurus - Broken Herringbone
