I'm not sure what it's called, but I'm making a "memory" hoop detailing the birth of my friend's baby.  The nursery is My Neighbor Totoro theme. 

I made this mock up of what I wanted, but it seems a bit plain.  The background will be light blue with light blue stars.

What can I do to jazz it up and what colors should I use for the thread? The empty space is his last name.

That is a really cute idea. What colors are they using in his room? Primary colors will definitely give it a big pop.

I was thinking that yellow would look nice against the blue - are those little black faces the stars?

The nursery doesn't have any specific colors that I know of.  I think blues and greens.

The black faces are "soot sprites" from the movies.

I don't think it looks plain at all!  I think it will be really cute!
What color will the soot sprites be?
I think that something bright for the lettering would look good against that background like red or yellow.
After you are done stitching, you could always outline a few of the stars to make them pop.

The fabric you are using is looking very good. As it is of blue color, embroidery using orange thread will give a fabulous look. Hope to see your completed project.
