I am working on a hoop for a swap and there are some larger sized letters in the design.  I am thinking rather than just outlining them I want to fill them in.  Any suggestions for a fill stitch other than satin that would look good for letters?

I personally dislike satin stitch for most things; it's so hard to make it perfect.  Long-and-short stitch works better, I think, or split backstitch, which is the stitch I use the most.

You are the fill stitch expert!  Thank you for the advice and the links.  I used a bit of satin stitch in this piece but I don't think I will get right for the letters.  Plus I want to branch out and learn to do and use different stitches.

Do you stitch the outline first then stitch the filling?

I stitch pretty randomly most of the time....I'll sometimes do part of the outline then part of the fill, and I change colors constantly.  I'm pretty darn haphazard with it!  Tongue

I usually outline and then fill the stitch in with a fill or seed stitch.

Thanks for the tips.  I am hoping to pull my hoop out tonight and work on it some more.  One more question... how many strands do you usually use for the split backstitch?

I usually use two strands except for fine detail when I use one.  Smiley
