I made this wee creature for my partner fancybutch in the Enchanted Forest Swap.  All it is is natural materials, wire, a rock and resin.  I found the technique in a book called Resin Alchemy by Susan Lenart Kazmer (the developer of Ice Resin).  If you have always wanted to try resin but can't quite get started, I would recommend this book.

I started by taping a white plastic garbage bag (which I bought at a dollar store) to a board.  I used kitchen sponges (also bought at a dollar store) cut into wedge shapes to apply the resin.  I started by glazing the maple spinners into pairs of twos with a bit of wire between the join points(I recently found some spinners that were still joined in the middle.  If you have those I would not break them apart but use them joined).  I did mine flat on the plastic, but when I do it again, I'll try and hang them so they resin doesn't pool so much.  Wait 24 hours.  In the mean time, I gathered or dug out of my stash all the other parts.  The body and legs are one  root that were collected along a logging road.  The arms are another root that I wired to the body.  The head is the rock inside of a sycamore bomb.  The hair is the inner part of a dried rose.  It took about...5 different resin applications to get it all together, but now that I've done it, I think I can do it in three steps.  Then I just wired it to a rock and one more resin coating.

This was so much fun to make.  And though it seems very delicate, it is way tougher then it looks Grin

Thanks for looking Grin

I remember the first time I saw maple spinners (we only had sycamores where I grew up when I was a kid).  I was sure they were fairy wings.  The ones I used here were spring spinners, so some of them had that lovely rosie pinkish red color to them.  Sadly, I didn't glaze them quick enough and they mostly had faded.  But the sandy brown become a gorgeous honey color, so I'm happy with that too.

I'm not a super fairy person, but I so love this. It's so organic and free. Your pics are perfect, too.

I love it, thank you so much.  I love how it feels and looks organic, truly in the spirit of the woods.  The colours and tones are great.

This is really amazing, but did you have to go and make me want to try another craft?!  Wink  I've always wanted to do something with the maple seeds, they coat our yard every year, and now here's a way to!  Watch out, I'll be resining everything!!

OH MY GOODNESS! I love her! Ehm... it... This has such a woodsy-enchanted feeling, that I NEED to have one come to live with me! I am sure it could find a good home with one of my potted plants ( and I believe it would make it grow even more nicely)

That is one awesome creation, my dear, I really love it!

Smeddley--Well look how the maple fairy blesses you! heheheh I have to hunt them down.  I think if I just found them on my lawn, my laboratory would be stuffed with jars full of spinners Grin

lovesclutter--Your so sweet!  Thank you for the heart felt complement.  And my mom used to accuse me of being a changling when I was a child...she claims me now though Grin

petskin--That would look great!  Especially with a weird colored rose Grin

gotgrey--Thanks GG.  Resin is a messy mistress but I'm having so much fun with it, I don't care at all Grin  I just am going to live with the fact my laboratory will be covered in resin eventually Grin

The Raging Sloth--Thanks Grin.  Now I see potential stick fae everywhere Grin

loves2experiment--Thanks Grin.  Beautiful is not something I strive for most of the time, but in this case, I'll take it Grin

coocoosnest--Thanks.  And that book was the tipping point for me.  I have wanted to play with resin and I have about 6 different packs of resin I collected over the years, but I was so afraid to start.  The book made me HAVE to start.  I hope you find it.  I ordered mine from Taunton Press Grin

Dearest BB--Don't worry Sweetling, I have more then one crawling around in my head begging to come live with you....though I'm trying to think of new ways to give them a base.  Mailing 23 fae with rocks on their feet to your planet might break the bank...and the post peoples backs Grin

I consider resin magic snot at this point LimeR.  Kind of gross and sticky to deal with, but it does some amazing things.  I have a few swap things I'm working on that are completely different from what I've shown so far.  So far, it's done everything I've asked it to do Grin
