I've been wanting to try making something like this since I saw the tutorial on Oh Fransson.  I'd already separated out a small stack of yellow-hued charm squares, I just needed an excuse to go at them with a rotary cutter.  Spotting this challenge gave me that nudge!

I modified the tutorial a bit - my squares are 1" finished (1.5" cut, 9 from each charm square), and obviously I didn't do a checker pattern with them.  Initially I wasn't sure what pattern to do, though I knew I didn't want them random.

After playing around and cutting some more yellow squares from some of my stash, I ended up with a light-to-dark arrangement that said "sun" to me - especially as it's summer now and I'm also named after the sun!  I really enjoyed putting the patchwork together, and bought some perle cotton to try hand-quilting it - the first time I've ever hand-quilted anything!  It was not easy - there are a lot of seams under there (duh!) and my perle cotton was quite thick.  Still, I like it.  The metallic thread was done by machine with a combination of a walking foot, a free-motion foot, and an awful lot of swearing.  The sun motif was then embellished with 100 metallic-finish seed beads.  The whole thing is ~10" square with hand-finished binding.  I plan to hang it on the wall so that we have a splash of sun all year round.  Smiley

This is amazing! I love the ombre effect going from dark to light and the quilting and beading on top is the perfect embellishment. Great job!
