I did a class a few months ago, and this was my first go at reproducing the decorating techniques we covered there at home; of course, I had forgot a lot, and didn't have the range of supplies that our teacher had brought so I improvised along the way... but I'm pretty pleased with the results. My friend had asked me for a recipe book to write all his recipes in, rather than having them all laying around on scraps of paper

I took cardstock, and covered it unevenly in gesso, which I stamped into for texture. Once dry I used distress inks... then a layer of matt varnish to seal, and some permanent ink detail stamped on top. Once dry, I covered the back in smooshed up tissue paper (then varnished) to line it (kinda). this was folded into the cover
i used left over cover bits to make a pocket to keep magazine cutting etc in, which became the back 'signature'
While making the cover, I had used the gesso stamp offs to decorate my signature wraps - so I added distress inks to them, cut to shape to use as dividers and labelled them. Folding all the papers for pages was a good use of drying time Smiley

I bound the whole thing in the 'kiss' style because I like the crosses than produces on the spine, and I added a length of ribbon sewn through the cover at various points, to secure the warp-over front

it didn't really come out how I had planned... but i was pleased with it none-the-less

the only really major problem I had was that the distress inks I used on the cover were very difficult to work with on top of the gesso; they kept washing out, and obviously they ran when I applied the varnish. I think I need a non-water soluble, slow drying ink to work with... any recommendations?

This is beautiful! All the things you mention look intentional to me, and add so much depth. Smiley

Maybe try alcohol inks.

Have you tried Stazon - here is a link to a site for more info http://www.joannasheen.com/craft-supplies/inkpads-stamping-accessories/stazon-solvent-ink-pad/.

It can be used on metal, glass, etc. You will need their brand stamp cleaner though, unless you are happy you stamps remaining coloured  Grin

Love the recipe book, by the way, it is beautiful.

Thanks for the tips - I'll look into alcohol inks.
Seeuudee, have you tried the Stazon? How quickly do they dry - would I have time to smudge or blend them do you think?

Thanks for the lovely comments too Smiley

I haven't used them myself, but every demonstration I have seen, they put the piece aside for about 5 minutes before continuing, so I guess it takes a few minutes to dry. Not sure whether that is long enough for what you need it for.
