Welcome to the Careers Advisory Office

Time to choose your profession!

Once you have completed 7 terms of the HPC and become an alumni, it's time to start training for your career. Careers Training is two stranded;
- Career Pathways: You should choose a job-specific career pathway to follow, and build a resume with each requirement (listed below). This will take at least 7 terms, but there is no upper time limit so work at your own pace and craft to your best. Let us know what career you're aiming towards so that we can cheer you along
- Employability Challenges: You should also complete any 7 'employability challenges' (more on these below) to demonstrate your non-academic skills and convince someone to give you a job! Add these to your resume too.

Professions are only open to alumni (that is, students who have already completed 7 terms at Hogwarts)
Current alumni are...
Gryffindors:
jenleahlynn (arithmancy professor), Mamaneedles, Mistress Jennie (unspeakable), tiamatfire (charms professor) , WhistleFish (homeschool mom / homemaker)

Hufflepuffs:
Moonflame (potioneer)

Ravenclaws:
Audania1, Fibrealchimist (custom cafe-shop owner), noodle-bug (unspeakable), pottermouth

Slytherins;
Antbee (cafe/store owner), ErinAquaheart (magizoologist), Naantje (arithmancer), Technicolouraquaheart

(Hint... Your username is a link to your ongoing resume, if you have provided me with one!)

~~Career pathways~~
The requirements for each career pathway are listed below. You can only follow 1 pathway at a time.

If an alumni student wants to propose a profession we don't have listed, they may request a pathway be built, or present a course of study that the headmistresses & career' officer (Mistress Jennie & Noodle-bug) will review for approval. Once a new profession path is approved, it will be added to the list.

Job Specific Career Pathways Requirements:
Remember, you will also need to complete 7 Employability Challenges!

~~Employability Challenges~~
Some of these challenges are ongoing with no time restriction, but some are pop-up challenges with a limited time window. More challenges will be added over time
You must complete any 7 employability challenges and add them to your resume to qualify for any career.
Employability Challenges don't earn house points, but may be combined with other classes or challenges

Resume Builder
Create a place online where you can keep a record of your progress on your chosen career pathway, with links to each relevant project submitted here on the HPC.
This can be in the Careers Record Office here in this thread on Craftster, or anywhere convenient to you on-line. Since they will take several terms to complete a career, meaning submitted projects all over the place.... it will be much easier to keep a list of links that you update as you go.
How you organise this, format it, keep it on track, etc, is all up to you.
Remember, you will need links to each project to submit a list and be accepted for your job once you've finished your career pathway

Time management

Being able to work to a schedule is an essential skill in any work environment. Craft a project that must be completed by a specific time (for example, in time for someones' birthday. You must announce ahead of time what you intend to create (an OWL or NEWT proposal, or a simple post stating what you will craft and when it will be finished). You project must be finished to your highest standard by that date

Skills Sharer

Sharing skills and knowledge is a vital aspect of team work, an d helps create a productive work place. To demonstrate your ability to share expertise, you must teach someone else a craft skill that you enjoy; for example, teach someone to knit, help them bake a favourite recipe, or pose for a budding artist to draw you. Submit an example of their work (this does not have to be a finished piece), or a picture of them enjoying their new skill.

Wide World Explorer

We are preparing you to step into the wider world of your new career! Dip a toe in the waters outside the HPC by taking part in any one of the Craft Challenges or Craft Swaps hosted here on Craftster

Overtime
Show that you are willing to put the hours in by completing all 3 detention challenges in any one semester

Skills Expansion stage one
Build on your CV by learning a new technique in a craft you are already familiar with. For example: learn a new stitch type, try out a different mounting technique, experiment with an unfamiliar tool.

Skills Expansion stage two
add a whole new section to your CV by learning an entirely new craft type that you have not tried before.

Coffee Break Snacks
take a break and have a sugary treat to perk you up for the rest of the day... complete any 5 Bertie Bott's Bean challenges

Pop-Up Employability Challenge!
These challenges can only be completed within a limited time frame

Current Pop-Up Employability Challenges

Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V stage one
may be collected in Winter Semester 2014 Only
the holiday season can be difficult for crafters, and especially difficult to tackle can be the repetitive craft projects where several multiples of similar items are needed (such as cards, gift tags, dinner place settings, family gifts....). Master this challenge by making 5 or more matching items

Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V stage two
may be collected in Winter Semester 2014 Only
Master this challenge by making 15 or more matching items!

Hi sammy
I'm really sorry, but careers are only open to 'alumni' students; that is, people who have already completed 7 terms in the HPC (you'll become an alumni in your 8th term... this is your 4th term so you're half way there!)

Also just so everyone is clear, the pathway requirements are filled out as we go; not using previously completed projects. So, for example, fibrealchimist became an alumni last term; her career pathway requirements will all date from then onwards.

It's a new term, and so we welcome new alumni students to our ranks!

Also, some new employability challenges have been posted, including some pop-up challenges which you will only be able to collect if you complete them this term

I've had a bit of a shift around of information to try to make it clearer, and easier to find to refer to, so please let me know if you think I've missed anything or confused the matter Smiley

You are welcome to include work you did from your first term as an alumni (the intention was to have the careers office up and running at the same time as our first set of alumni graduates, but unfortunately that didn't happen!). Of course, if you would rather just start now that's fine too Smiley
