This sounds fun, but I have never altered a tin before, and I'm nervous about starting with a mini one... what kinds of techniques do you all use when altering tins (especially mini ones)?

What has come to my mind is...
decoupage/paper-crafting (sculpting on it with paper clay, turning it into a paper diorama, making it into a mini book), beading/jewelry (wrapping it in beading, turning it into a base for a pendent), wire work (sculpting something with wire onto it, or through it, making a cage for it to hang with wire), polymer clay (again, sculpting on it, wrapping it in decorated clay, making components for it with clay), resin clay (embedding components in it with the clay, like crystals, adding mica powder colouring), flocking, resin (embedding components in layers of resin to make a dimensional collage), soldering, cold connections like riveting...

I am getting excited just thinking of this.  I just hope some of my ideas work... and can safely be mailed!

those are all terrific ideas Onyxnox Cheesy  as for shipping, bubble wrap and packing peanuts...in a padded envelope always works for me!

some ideas that have been floating in my head for the mini tin's exterior...
aluminum foil tape (embossing, alcohol inks, etc.), poly clay to create textured surfaces, fabric and fiber (some sort of textile artwork), and hmmm...paper.

obviously, my final decision is dependent on what works out best based on my partner's list of themes Smiley

Oh yes - I love aluminum tape.  You can also get copper tape too - so you can emboss and colour that, and add some soldered elements.  I forgot too - for one matchbox I did last year or a couple of years ago, I actually added wood veneer and then wood burned some of it, and stained it too.

oooh...copper tape.  I need to get my hands on some Smiley  The natural patina formed when copper is oxidized is awesome.  I'm pretty sure I have some acetic acid in my lab Cheesy

Well, I can't get thoughts of altered tins out of my head, so I went ahead and sent in my questionnaire just now.  i realized today I have an almost-empty (regular size) mint tin sitting in my desk drawer at work, so since we have more than a week before sign-ups close, I think I'll see if I can't try practicing out some different techniques in the meantime.
