One of my very best friends that I met after moving to North Carolina was assigned to be my partner in a local meetup group craft swap. I wanted to really spoil her, especially since she might not to do much crafting starting this summer (she got accepted into a graduate architectural program, and I may never see her again... for the next four years... or so Wink ). Swapping with my local craft group has also been my reason for absence on Craftster for several months.

She had the Amy Butler Weekender Bag on her wishlist, but I couldn't find the pattern as a pdf, and was being lazy and didnt' want to wait to ship it. I search high and low on the internet, and this bad boy was the closest I found to a nice traveling bag that was attractive and practical. I found the pattern on this Etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/listing/156970315/departure-satchel-pdf-sewing-pattern?ref=shop_home_active_9

I removed about three of the zippered pockets that were in the pattern to save time. I also added piping to make it look a little more like the Amy Butler bag (and to add a nice pop of contrast). And finally, I used a heavier interfacing to make sure the bag maintained its shape.

It has a  neat "trolley sleeve" on the back for sliding over the handle of pull-along luggage, too!

And it still has lots of pockets, including two plain pockets, and a zippered "laptop pocket" which seems more tablet sized to me, but I think I printed the pattern off too small. Whoops!  Tongue

With the left over fabric, I made a little accordion wallet to go with it. I should have used a thinner fabric for the sides so that it would fold up slimmer (lesson learned!). I also need to figure out a better way to put the zipper in next time so it doesn't get all puckered and weird.

Ooh love both these patterns! I've also been wishy washy on buying that Patty Young Joann fabric but pretty sure I need to snatch some up now! Smiley

I looove this fabric. I always am quite happy when I just enjoy staring endlessly at the fabric I pick for a project. It makes every aspect from ironing to hand-sewing closings all the more pleasant. Luckily I have some scraps leftover to play with later Cheesy I was originally going to order something online, but when I saw those teal poppies, I wanted it right away! You should definitely grab some! It's so lovely.

I'm a huge Patty Young fan anyways, I think I have a Joann coupon around here so I better get on it! Smiley

I'm hoarding my last little bits of Flora and Fauna from a few years ago! I used a little bit in a pouch for myself the other day, it makes me so happy to look at it!

Have fun playing with your scraps of poppies! I think initially I wasn't going to get this because I have a ton of Laura Gun Poppies (my fave designer, Patty Young being number 2 favorite) but that's just silly, right? They're totally different! Cheesy

Beautiful bag! Great job on it. How would you rate the difficulty of it? beginner, intermediate, expert?

Do you print the pattern pieces?

It's awesome!! I like it even more than the Weekender! Great fabric choices and adding the piping was a fab idea.

Very nice!  I like the spring-like fabrics too, and love the pocket on the front.  She must have loved it!
