so many crafts, so little time...

I created a mixed media growth chart for my sons' room. It was inspired by several pins: http://www.pinterest.com/mdelilahcarlson/growth-chart-inspiration/. I had never tried any mixed media before, so I felt a little timid, but it was super fun to make! Here it is in full:

Giraffes are my favorite animal, and some of my fondest memories are of a semester I spent in Tanzania during medical school. My then-boyfriend (now-husband) and I went on a safari together, so that made the choice of the safari theme even more meaningful.

I got a free-motion foot for my sewing machine and used a combination of Heat-n-Bond, machine embroidery, and hand quilting to combine maps, giraffes salvaged from a Tanzanian wall hanging, and various other items onto a muslin background. On the map at the top of the hanging I added several "clouds" made of white feathers held in place with white mesh:

The ruler is made from a brown paper bag, embellished with calligraphy and machine stitching. Throughout the hanging are painted leaves, applied using cut sponges and a hand-made template. The backing of the hanging was made from a second-hand sheet with a wilderness scene printed on it. It was hung using a piece of thin bamboo, a memento of my childhood in Papua New Guinea (the wild travel theme again!).

At the bottom is a collage of maps of different parts of Africa, including the Olduvai Gorge and the Nile River:

Thanks for looking!

Did you sleep?? Roll Eyes
Very interesting. And neat story of the history of the "zoo" art.
With the safari and all. It will make for a wonderful story while little guy grows up.  Grin

NEW REQUEST: Need quilting fabric with ONLY purple, grey, green. Solids or Prints in any combination/shades, but NO OTHER COLORS ALLOWED. HELP! They are hard to find.
