Hello!

This is my first post on this board - just recently got into the Zentangle line drawings and am having a lot of fun with it! (The Easter Bunny brought me a book and some supplies!)  Here are my first completed drawings, in the order in which I did them.

The first ones were on ATC's:

True Zentangle is supposed to be on a 3.5"x3.5" tile and include only black, white and gray, but . . . I like color!

Next I tried some 4"x4" cards:

And then a 6"x8" pad of paper:

Thanks for looking!  Would love to hear any thoughts you have!

Wow, you've been busy! My favs are the two trees. Love tangles that use a natural shape to do the doodle within. Smiley

Love the tangles. As to size and color. I have seen some amazing art on the web that is all sizes and colors and fall into the zentangle world. If you are caught in the Zentangle branding then yes, follow the rules. But if you believe like me that taking the age-old art of doodling and patterning, and giving it a new name does not make you the owner of a concept, then by all means branch out. Add color, use any shape paper. Tangle an egg for Easter or Spring.

I have fun with them too. What a fun way to express yourself.

Thanks, both!  And no, I don't really buy into the copyrighted thing, but if I'm going to call it "zentangle," I figured I should make mention of what the rules are "supposed" to be.

Maybe we should do a zentangle along? No hard rules but just for relaxation and enjoyment? Maybe a swap?

That could be cool!  I've never done an "along" or a swap, but could get into one with the zentangle doodles . . .

My favorite is the swirl with the tentacle-like shapes coming out - looks like a cool sea creature!

As to the brand, I like to call mine "zendoodles", though they kinda mock that, but it gets around the copyright thing, and I don't have to worry about their rules.  I actually started doodling completely free-form, then tried to follow their steps/rules in a book and it killed it for me.  I lost all the enjoyment, and I'm still trying to work back to where I was.

I know some people like rules, and there are times when rules are necessary, but... not in this case, and not for me!

Thanks!  I like the tentacles, too.  Wish I could be more intentional about making things look as I want them to!

I have always doodled, and what I liked about the Zentangle stuff was three-fold.

First - it talked about using the small cards to work on, so that projects do not seem overwhelming at the outset.

Second - they do not start out with an image in mind that they are trying to achieve - it just grows as you do it, which was very freeing for me, as I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to drawings, and so never wind up finishing anything!

And Third, I am a therapist, and I liked having a different tool to help people enter into a more mindful state - with the small scale and "no wrong mark" philosophy, it would be an unintimidating, fun way to be mindful.

So, while I don't like the idea of the copyright and all that, I can credit it with opening up a new and fun art form for me!  I just won't follow all the rules!  And ZenDoodle sounds just fine to me!  Smiley
