The short version: Look! I made a pretty thing!

The longer version:

It all started with this pin... I hadn't really thought about making it myself, and then AmandaBL claimed me for it in the Ongoing Pinterest Swap. You should go look at it! She was thoughtful enough to include some goodies to help me make my own tin garden. I was really excited to try, but I wasn't sure what to use for grass so I just let the idea stew for a bit...

It's not that easy to get altoid tins in Sweden, but I do have a bunch of these:

It's a tin promoting cough drops, and we got tons of them sent to the pharmacy where I work. I don't know if we gave any out... Any promotion not okayed by the marketing department tend to just vanish mysteriously... Ahem, I liberated a couple of them (with permission...).

I also tend to hold on to all kinds off odd bits and bobs, and I've been hanging on to a set of glass fish. They're connected to glass floats with fishing wire, and the idea is to have a nice fake fish bowl with the fish hanging as if they're swimming. It sounds good in theory, but standing water gets gross quickly... Luckily my little fishie can swim again, without yucky water.

For the background I searched for underwater stock photos, and I found this one by Tigers-stock. I printed it out and glued it to the inside of the tin using decoupage glue (I guess it's something like mod podge). Next untied the knot securing the glass floater to the fish. The string was long enough to hang the fish from and I duct taped it to the lid. As much as I like duct tape I wanted a more classy look on the outside of the tin, so it got a face lift with some origami paper and a neat frog and fish pond paper I had in my stash. I finished it off with a decoupage varnish to get rid of the slightly sticky feeling from the glue and make it nice and shiny.

When everything was dry I filled the tin with sand. The sand comes from Sgsand, one of my favourite beaches. I would swim there more often, but it's freaking cold in the Baltic sea... I'm not sure why I have a plastic bag of sand in my stash, but look I FINALLT USED IT! Err... Some of it.

The decorations in the sand are found and swapped objects. I think you recognise the neat green compass AmandaBL sent. Gemusia sent me the small pieces of amber in the make a friend swap, and the glass piece and star are from a whimsy jar I got in a magic yarnball swap from littlebluegirl. The cute little shells are from a broken necklace.

I'm very happy with my new aquarium! It's been a while since I made something fun and silly for me... Smiley

Thanks Smiley I'm glad mr fishy finally got a home. I like glass animals, but I think it's hard to display them. Heh... This will probably be a nightmare to dust due to the sand. It's not stuck to the tin at all so if I'm not careful I'll end up with a tiny beach on the floor Grin

How great that the OPS inspired this, and you were able to liberate some stash objects. This looks great! I hope you don't stop here, I'm sure you have more in your stash that should be used to create other little tins.

There are still more fishes where that one come from. There's even a sea horse, but he's a bit too big for the tins I've got. I'll keep plotting!
