I've found cross stitch patterns to work out well for perler bead designs. I struggle to find "cool" boy crafts for my son and I to do together, so we were both happy to work on these Star Wars characters with Perler beads.

I totally agree. I love using and designing cross stitch patterns for perler bead designs.

My son, in an attempt to get me to play Spore, agreed to try one of my hobbies. He ended up cross stitching a little designing using a large perler bead creation as a template.
