I bought a vintage 40's pattern off of etsy about a year ago and I pulled it out and it was completely foreign to me.  The pattern was full of holes and there hardly any markings.  A far cry from today's patterns.  Feeling defeated, I stuffed it back in the envelope and walked away (but I bought yards of wool plaid for it first)

Then, I had a challenge.  Project Run and Play's sew along had "Mad for Plaid" week and it was just the kick I needed to finally decipher the pattern.  So, scissors in hand, I started along a trip that took several days and many muslins, but I succeeded with a lot of help from my Aunt who helped me understand what the holes in the pattern meant.  It seems they were for matching up pieces a lot like we use x on patterns today.

See!  HOLES!

So, what I loved about this pattern was that it didn't spare any little details simply because it was a child's garment.  There are darts in the jacket, elbow pleats, a full lining and beautiful construction (if a better seamstress had sew it, that is.)  There are even instructions for how to make and insert shoulder pads.  Tiny little size 2T shoulder pads.  I love it!

So, here it!

It's a jacket, little hat and jumper.  THe jumper has completely removable straps which I love.  As she gets too tall for it, she can wear it as a skirt Smiley

I made the blouse too Smiley

Omg how cute!

I wouldn't have known what to do with holes either. Smiley.  I totally believe the housewives of yesteryear knew more about sewing than us though and wouldn't need all the instructions. Smiley

They definitely knew more about sewing!  All I had to do was call my aunt and she walked me through it lol
