Details of swap:

We will swap 1 doll with one partner. These are mixed media art dolls so you can use fabric, paper, metal, natural materials, buttons, charms, etc. You will list several themes for your partner to work around but you also understand that not everyone will be knowledgeable about your particular favorites. So you can say "Nature" as one of your themes but "Babylon 5" might be too scary/difficult for someone who doesn't share your love of those characters.

We are calling this an "art doll" swap - what does that mean exactly? Well, it means different things to different folks. I don't want to put my particular definition here but let's agree that the dolls will be 6" to 12" tall, made with fabric, paper and whatever else you use in your art work and will represent one or more of the themes your partner lists. Here is Wikipedia's definition:

"Art dolls are dolls created by artists and intended as expressive and unique art objects rather than children's toys. Art dolls made by professional artists may be considered fine art. Made using a wide variety of styles and media, some are abstract or tribal, while others are incredibly realistic. They range from dolls with pre-manufactured parts to being wholly fabricated by the artist or sculptor. The term "art dolls" usually refers to human-like dolls, but not always. Art dolls can depict animals, mythical creatures, or abstract beings."

The best way to express your desires for making and receiving is through communication. Please chat with your partner so she knows what you want. Again, no guarantee that each of us has the same skills or sewing proficiency to make exactly what you think you want. I'll include lots of questions to help partners get to know what each other wants.

The other component for a great swap , in my opinion, is to have fun, try something new and don't overextend yourself. Choose a project that you want to make - not something that is too hard for you to achieve.

Here are the galleries from previous swaps - art dolls and JunkerJane-style dolls:

This looks like fun.  I haven't made an art doll before.  I'll have to ponder it and look at the old galleries before I jump in.

Just sent in my Q. I've never liked dolls, yet lately I have been obsessed with them. I've so enjoyed making monsters and even a poppet (never again...too fussy for me), rag dolls and painted fabric animals. And then getting one in the mail! So this is fun.

I love the galleries, oh the ideas are starting to spin in my head...there goes restful sleep for a while.

Thanks Smmarrt, I love your little painted button doll on the opening pic.

I just signed up! I'm quite a bit nervous, all of the other swap galleries were filled with such great dolls, I hope mine turns out half as good as them...

cmarion3 - I agree. I'm not a huge doll-lover. But I do enjoy making them. I have maybe 50 - 60 dotee dolls - little art dolls that hang, over my desk. That's what got me onto Craftster initially and swapping. I think often that I should box them all up and save them but each time I start to pack them, I rearrange them instead. So I still like to look at them.

And meowari - don't be intimidated. Newbies sometimes make the coolest dolls. You don't know what the rules are so you make stuff happen and fit together and it always works out. Just make what you love and I'm sure your partner will love it also.
