I LOVE altered art!

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to share my latest altered project: I altered a Rubik's cube!

Anyone here besides me old enough to remember the Spirograph? It was my favorite toy as a child, and I was able to find one on eBay! I decided to use it to create the images that I put on each side of the Altered Rubik's Cube. I drew the images with a fine point black marker on watercolor paper, then used watercolors to paint each image.

If you'd like a tutorial, I have one posted on my blog at http://www.alteredarts.net/altered-rubiks-cube

I'd love to know what you think.

Thanks for looking!
Kathleen

Very nice. I love that you have combined two iconic toys from my youth. And the result is pretty too.

I was so jealous that my sister had a spirograph when we were young, and she hardly ever let me use it!
Good work!

This is excellent! I know I have an unsolved Rubik's Cube around here somewhere, as well as a Spirograph set (found mine on eBay, too! Smiley ). I love your idea of using the Spirograph designs as the basis of the mandala.

Thanks for sharing the dimensions of your template (I checked out the directions on your blog and have them bookmarked for the future), too. That'll make it easier to get started once I find my Rubik's cube!

Thanks, everyone for all the nice words!

craftADDchick: I am so happy that you are going to make one too! Check the dimensions of your Rubik's cube carefully against my measurements. The one that I altered seemed smaller than the original one I had years ago. Or maybe I'm just bigger now! LOL. I love that you have a Spirograph too! I was as excited to buy it off eBay as I was when I got it as a child, maybe more so! This is the first chance I've had to use it in a project, but now I'm thinking that these mandalas will be showing up in my art journal pages too! Smiley

Good idea! Depending on whether I have an original or a "knockoff," the measurements may not match exactly. But, even if your template doesn't match exactly, it still shows how to set it all up... because I'm pretty sure I would have neglected to account for the gaps in between Wink

While doing a bit of organizing, I only just recently "unearthed" my Spirograph. I'll definitely be playing around with it in the near future. It'll be good practice so that, when I do locate my Rubik's cube, I'll be a pro!

Kathleen~

Spirographs are one of my favorite things. This is such a great idea to combine two favorite toys this way...magical.

I misplaced my spirograph set, but when I'm bored, I just love to doodle them freestyle (or any kind of spirals).

Blessings,
Sandra
