BirdBones and I recently hosted a Loyal Mutant swap.  The rules were to create a new, never before seen creature (in any materials) using at least two "ingredients" from one's partner's like list.  I teamed up with RobbinZombie and managed to shove 12 things from her list into my mutation...

Here is the figure I started with..

I bought it at a thrift for a buck.  It was missing the battery cover and the arms were loose and hanging free (I'd ripped them off already in this picture)

This is the list of things I used for my creation..

1. DinosaursThis is how I picked the figure to work with.  I got it for a buck at a thrift store.  It's arms were busted and it didn't have the battery cover.
2. Hammerhead sharkHead shape
3. BigfootFur and feet
4. YetiIt is hard to see, but he has a Yeti's conical skull.  Also the white fur.
5. PterosaursBrazil has a crypto that they think is a pterosaur.  They say it glows in the dark, so many parts of this creature glow too.
6. White RabbitTeeth, eye (which I made), white fur, and ear shape echoed in the head shape
7. Yodaears.  This was the spontaneous generation from the experiments Wulf and I were doping on transportation.   (I just suddenly saw Yoda ears while I was sculpting the hammerhead extensions...)
8. Angler fishThe tail lights up.  The switch is under the hump at the top of the tail
9. Bat type wingsThe inside of them glows a bit, as mentioned in #5
10. NarwhalHorn/tusk
11. WulfApparently one of Wulfs beard hairs also made it into the genetic soup.
12. MinionOverall color (but that is what color the toy was to begin with!), arms

The mutant has two electrical components.  One is a yellow switch under it's tail.  That activates a voice when you pull the trigger under the tail.  The other lights up the tail.  It is under the hump on the top of the tail.  I tried to make it as tough as possible, so it could  be played with a bit.  But it still should be considered an art piece mostly.  It can be posed in several different ways as well.

So, lets take a closer look at a few of the parts...

I decided it was mostly a Minion due to the original color yellow in the figure.  So it is wearing little rubber gloves made from FIMO.  I was super lucky in that I had fabric the same color as the figures yellow (and Martha Stewart's glow in the dark yellow paint was also the same color yellow) so the arm is made from a tube covered in the fabric.  You can also see the battery cover I made from Popsicle sticks and craft foam in this pic.

The ears/hammer head eye support is just a cardboard bit with paper clay over it.  I love this paper clay!  It is powder and you add the water to it to be able to mold it.  It dries super hard and seems to stick well to many surfaces.  I used clear safety eyes and put a shiny, sparkly sticker on the clear part...

The wings are made from the fabric that is hand stitched around wire.  The back of the wing (that you see now) is the fabric.  I used the MS yellow glow paint on the other side, to help to stiffen and protect the fabric.  The tips of the wing points are covered with glow in the dark plastic vampire fangs, cut from the fang sets that go in ones mouth.  I hot glued them on and then squished them with a silicon oven mit, just so they looked less fang like and more fingernail like.

Here's the angler tail lit up...

And here is where the battery pack sits..

The rabbit eye is hand painted glass.  It's mounted on the head with the paper clay.  The buck teeth, nose and narwhal horn are both glow in the dark FIMO, adhered with epoxy.  The cheeks are paper clay with the whiskers (broom stalks!) glued in with the epoxy too.

One of the cool things about this toy is that even though it was missing the battery pack cover, the electronics inside still worked.  So, when you pull the trigger at the back under the tail, the figure lunges forward and a long and terrifying (it was pretty tough sounding...) roar and growl.

And that's about it realy....It was super fun to make.  I don't think I've used so many different kinds of techniques and materials in one piece before.  It came out cuter then I was envisioning too.  I thought he would be a formidable foe, but I think his little face is just too cute to consider him too tough Grin

Thanks for looking Grin

This came out so amazing! The rubber gloves and wings are tied for my favorite elements. What kind of paper clay did you use? I've never tried that, but it looks really good, so maybe I'll find some!

That's a big compliment to me kwality.  Since I'm an artists without a favo medium, it makes me happy when stuff looks like I did indeed made it.

AD, the stuff is called Celluclay II instant paper mache...and it's from Germany, I have just learned!  I bought it maybe 10 years ago? from Michaels.  It's a one pound block.  If I find it again, I'm going to buy 2 blocks Grin

Well of course it had to be made by you! It has multiple eyes, light (how amazing is that) and combines so many weird themes and animals... I don't think there is anyone that could make this...

It is meant to be a compliment, weird is a good thing!  Grin
Normal doesn't excist.. it was made up by less weird folks hahaha Grin Grin

From inside here *points at head* it looks like I'm just putting things together in what appears to be an obvious way.....turns out, that IS my style LOL.  I've always admired artists that have an "obvious" style, like Kwality.  So, for her to be able to tell I made it makes me feel Yummy is all Grin

I don't think I've ever been so worried about shipping.  I grew fond of the "little" guy and I would not be able to re create him...unless I found the same figure again Grin

Thanks KC.  I don't think he means to be scary, he was just born that way Grin

Thanks Bella Grin.  I'm not sure it's my minds fault though.  Sometimes my hands just put things together before my brain knows what is going to happen.  It kind of happened that way in this case Grin

hehehe Yeah...I thought about accenting it a bit more, but decided that would be overkill Grin

But I think it's clear why the dinosaurs went extinct...the boys "bits" were on backwards!

Thanks I Sew Cute.  It was probably the hardest part to do...the wiring was not co-operating.  I would do it differently now

I think it rocks that your creatures tend to glow in the dark and light up! Every time I mutate anything, I keep wanting to add a light-up-feature, but I keep failing miserably at those attemps- all the better that you are so fabulous at that! Grin

Well....my secret is to use the LED and the battery pack from some preexisting thing.  In this case, it was the light from a "fake" tea light.  I worry I deconstructed it a bit too far and worry it might not work as well as I had hoped...

That is a great idea! I will go forth and collect led-tea lights ... and this is the first decent use I have heard for them, because the purpose of "fake candles" totally escapes me... especially the ones that have a wax shell... People do come up with the oddest things Wink
