Welcome to the Spring Nerd Battles Arena!
I, LovelyMiss, shall be your host and Head Gamemaker.

The Spring Nerd Battles welcomes all players from the Nerdyverse to join! The games are to inspire, encourage, and motivate your crafting adventure.  Players can join anytime during the season.

Are you wondering if you are part of the Nerdyverse?  John Green describes it quite well...
Nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff  Nerds are allowed to love stuff, like jump-up-and-down-in-the-chair-cant-control-yourself love it.  ...When people call people nerds, mostly what theyre saying is you like stuff.  Which is just not a good insult at all.  Like, You are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness.

Rules of Engagement
--There is a list of prompts for you to complete.
--You complete a prompt with a crafty item you think fulfills it; you can use your description to make it clear on how the craft fits the prompt.
--Players must craft to the best of their abilities and have a minimum of 30 minutes of crafting time per submission.
--A project can only be submitted for one Challenge/Flash Mob/UFO/Battle Royale/Alert prompt.
--A project does NOT have to be "nerdy, it only has to fulfill the prompt as you see it.
--Submitted projects must be started and completed during the current season, unless otherwise noted.
--There is SO MUCH to do in the Nerd Battles.  Do not feel like you have to craft everything.  Do what inspires you.
--We welcome all players from the Nerdyverse, no matter their Geekdom.
--We are never mean.
--We never exclude someone.
--We will keep it cleanish (PG-PG13).
--We will follow all Craftster guidelines, this includes staying on-topic (serious OT goes in FOC OT boards).
--You will be asked to join a team.
--Never hesitate in contacting Head Gamemaker with your questions, concerns, or ideas.

About Teams
--Teams are where like-minded players join to work together.
--There is no limit to the number of people in a team.
--Though you may feel at home in more than one team, pick the one that draws you the most.
--You may change teams each new season, but you cannot switch during a season.

How to Join the Nerd Battles
It is easy to join in the Nerd Battles craftalong!  Simply craft an item that fits one of the posted prompts and take photos of your finished project.  Post your project photos in the official Nerd Battles thread.  Make sure to include the header below (see How to turn in a project) with each project you post.  In the header of your first completed project you will declare your team. (You do not need to choose a team before you post your first project.)  You officially join a team when your first project is submitted.

---How To Turn in a Project---
Use this header for each Challenge/Battle Royale/Flash Mob/UFO/Alert you submit.

Battle/Challenge:  please include month & category
Team:
Bonus Points: include which bonus points you think you've earned (e.g., Giver, Engineering, UFO)
Project Name:
Project Page Link (if available):
Brief Description: (how it fits the requirements, pattern/techniques/recipe used, any fun tips, etc.)
Project Picture:

You can add more than one project to your post, but a header must be used for each project.

---Point System---
Challenges, Battles, Flash Mobs, UFO Sightings, and Alerts will earn 20 points unless otherwise denoted.

Research Projects will earn 100 points.  Research Projects are projects that take three or more weeks to complete.  They must be submitted for approval so that Gamemakers can track the timeline and encourage your successful completion.  You will detail what your plan is and how it will take the allotted time to complete.  If your Research Project is a surprise, such as swap project, you may submit your Research Plan to the Head Gamemaker.  Research Projects are separate from the normal Challenge/Battle/Flash Mob/UFO/Alert prompts.  In most cases it is not permissible to "double dip" on individual Research Project elements, so anything included in a Research Project cannot also be turned in for a Nerd Battles Challenge/Battle/Flash Mob/UFO/Alert prompt.
Visit the Research Project Lab for more information on completing a Research Project.

You can earn 10 Bonus Points for...
--Engineering: Turning in a project that includes a new tutorial, pattern, or recipe posted on Craftster boards (link must be given);
--Giver:  Crafting a project for charity;
--Prompt specific:  Some prompts may include the opportunity for special bonus points.  This information will be included in the text for the prompt.
You may earn more than one set of bonus points for your project.

Brownie Points Projects can earn 10 points, and are NOT eligible for additional Bonus Points.  Brownie Points Projects are items crafted for charity during the season that are NOT turned in as a prompt or Research Project.  If you submit a prompt or Research Project for charity, be sure to claim the Giver Bonus Points.

At the End Game, there will be Winners (but really no losers)
--Team Winners: average taken from number of players & point scored
--Special Awards: given by gamemakers
Winnings will include bragging rights, badges, and possible prizes.

Nerd Battles FAQ
What is the Nerd Battles time zone?
The Nerd Battles uses central time.  For month specific prompts, have your projects posted by 11:59 p.m. central time on the last day of the month.  The Nerd Battles close at 11:59 p.m. central time on the last day of the season.
When do the seasons run?
Spring is March - May, Summer is June - August, Fall is September - November, and Winter is December - February.
Do I have to sign-up to play?
No.  The only thing you have to do is start posting projects!  See the "How to join the Nerd Battles" section above for more information.
How do I join a team?
You officially join a team and will be added to the roster when you post your first project.
When can I join?
You can join the Nerd Battles at any time during the season.
Can I switch teams?
You can choose a new team at the start of each season (or whenever you start playing).  Changing teams during the season is not allowed.
Do projects have to be nerdy?
No.  As long as you describe how your item fits the prompt, it can be anything that takes at least 30 minutes to craft for Challenges, Battles, Flash Mobs, UFOs and Alerts, or three weeks or more for Research Projects.
When are prompts posted?
New Challenge, Battle, Flash Mob, and UFO prompts are posted each month.  They are usually available by noon on the first day of the month.  Alert prompts are usually posted once or twice a season at unspecific times.
Do the projects I turn in have to be crafted during a certain time period?
The Nerd Battles operate on an honor system, but any projects you turn in should be crafted during the current season of the Nerd Battles.  One exception is for works-in-progress.  In the case of WIPs you may have completed a majority of the work prior to the season starting, but as long as you put in at least 30 minutes of crafting time during the current season to finish the project, it is acceptable to turn it in for a prompt.  You should identify a project as a work-in-progress if you turn it in for a non-UFO prompt.
When are projects due?
Battle Royale and Flash Mob prompts are due by the end of their respective months.  UFO and Challenge prompts may be turned in any time during the season, regardless of the month in which they are issued.  For example, March UFOs and Challenges may be turned in during April or May.  Any special Alert prompts will indicate their specific due date.
Can a project "count" for more than one Craftalong?
Yes, definitely, as long as it fits the respective prompts or rules for each Craftalong!  For example, a project may be turned in for a Challenge prompt in the Nerd Battles, and the same project may also be turned in for a Class in the HPC.
If I craft multiples of the same item, can each one be turned in under a separate prompt?
It's up to you how you turn in projects!  Some players post each item under a different prompt, or some players turn like items in as a set under the same prompt.  Both are acceptable, as long at it meets the crafting-time requirements!  (To post them as separate prompts, each iteration will need to take at least 30 minutes of crafting time.)
Can I propose a work-in-progress as a Research Project?
Yes, as long as you have at least three weeks of crafting time left to go on the project before it is finished.
Is there a minimum number of projects I need to post?  Do I have to keep up in the thread and comment on every project posted?
No way!  Though some players like to comment on all of the projects, or turn in many projects, it's all just for fun.  Pop in when you can, comment when you're inspired, post projects when you want to, and don't worry when life gets in the way!  There is no need to ever feel guilty about your level of participation in the Nerd Games.
How do I get the badge images to show up in my Craftster profile?
Just upload the badge image under My Picture Hosting.  Once it's uploaded, you will have two options, "Copy and paste this into your Craftster post," or "To show a small linked thumbnail instead, copy and paste this."  Copy the thumbnail link and paste it under the "Brief Bio" section on your profile!  That's it!
I've heard Nerd Battles and Nerd Games.  Are they different?
In short, no.  Technically the Nerd Games happen during the Summer, and Nerd Battles in Fall, Winter, and Spring, but they all fall under the Nerd Games umbrella and are used interchangeably.
What if I have a problem or questions?
If you have an issue or question feel free to contact the Head Gamemaker, LovelyMiss.  If you have a general question about the Nerd Battles, you might want to head over the the Discussion Board.  We have wonderfully friendly and helpful players who would love to share their wisdom!

---This is the home for Completed Projects, Research Project Declarations, and "Oooos & Ahhhs."  For discussions, chatting, and progress pics, head over to the Nerd Battles Discussion.  Posts will be moved to appropriate threads when necessary.  Thanks for your help in keeping the Nerd Battles in order!---

---Battle Station---
You are welcome to craft for any, all, or none of these prompts.  Remember, they are just here to help get your crafty juices flowing!

Battle Royale
Changes each month.  Choose a side and craft a project to represent your choice.  Must be completed within the month of the battle.  Winner announced each month.

CLOSED: March Battle:  Color vs. Black & White
~*Color Wins!  Color - 10, Black & White - 6*~

CLOSED: April Battle:  Comic Books vs. Regular Books
~*Regular Books Win!  Regular Books - 12, Comic Books - 2*~

CLOSED: May Battle:  Tea vs. Coffee
~*Tea and Coffee Tie!  Tea - 3, Coffee - 3*~

Flash Mob
A flash mob is when many people suddenly come together to participate in the same act, usually something fun or unusual, and then disperse.  Our flash mobs involve synchronized crafting, so gather your stash, set your glue gun to "awesome," and prepare for the countdown...

Flash Mobs are quick and easy challenges that must be completed within the month they are issued.  Each Flash Mob prompt may only be submitted one time.

CLOSED: March Mob:  Spring has sprung.  Craft an item related to the Spring season.

CLOSED: April Mob:  To prolong the good fun of April Fool's Day, craft a humorous item, or an item that might be considered a novelty.

CLOSED: May Mob:  In celebration of Mother's Day, craft an item inspired by your favorite real or fictional female hero.

UFO Sightings
As a UFO Investigator, you are tasked with grabbing your gear anytime a UFO is spotted.  This may mean long nights, so better take along a project or two to entertain you while you wait.  Remember, your job is to take a picture of a completed UFO (aka Un-Finished Object) and report back to headquarters.  Good luck!  The truth is out there.

UFOs can be projects that you just haven't quite finished or projects that you bought all the supplies for but never got around to actually making.  If possible, post before and after pics in the thread.  UFO Sightings may be completed anytime during the Nerd Battles, up until the season ends on May 31st.  (For example, you may turn in March or April sightings in May.)

March Sighting:  January 23, 1974.  Unusual lights on an egg shaped craft, and earthquake like shaking, were witnessed in the Berwyn Mountains, North Wales, during an alleged UFO crash.  The lights changed color, flashing from red to yellow to white.  10 extra bonus points for turning in a UFO that uses yellow."

April Sighting: November 1989-April 1990. The Belgian Wave.  Over a six month span, around 13,500 people observed giant, silent, black triangles in the sky.  10 extra bonus points for turning in a UFO that uses black.

May Sighting: December 27, 1998, a family in South Africa witnessed a group of rounded triangular craft that were changing color in the sky.  They were overtaken by a huge gold-colored craft and departed instantaneously.  10 extra bonus points for turning in a UFO that uses gold.

Challenges
You may complete challenges at any time during the season (for example, March prompts may be submitted in April or May), but you may only submit each prompt one time.

--March--
Idioms.  Idioms are phrases or expressions that have a figurative meaning, and are usually specific to a given language.  Choose an idiom and craft an item inspired by it, or an item that literally represents your chosen expression.

Friendship is Magic.  Spread the magic of friendship, and crafting, by making an item for someone else.

Luck of the Irish.  Craft an item that is green, or an item that represents or is inspired by a good luck charm.

Clone Wars.  Choose an item off of Craftster, Pinterest, or other inspirational site, and craft your own version.  Post a link to the item that inspired you when you turn in your project.

Exterminate.  Use up some scraps, or the last of a supply, in a project of your choice.

--April--
Whats your sign?  Craft an item inspired by your astrological sign (any variant of astrology is fine).

Honey, you should see me in a crown.  Craft a regal or royal inspired item.

Now were cooking.  Whip up a tasty treat, or craft an item that would be useful at mealtime.

Youre the best around.  Craft an item using a technique you feel you excel at, or that shows off your best crafting skills.

Shrines.  Pay tribute to your nerdiness by crafting a shrine inspired by one of your geekdoms.  You can employ any medium or interpretation of shrine youd like for your project.

--May--
Book arts.  Craft a book, an item using book elements, or a project based on one of your favorite books.

It's actually pretty easy being green.  Craft an item that incorporates something reused, repurposed, or recycled, or that is otherwise Earth friendly.

Going postal.  Craft a piece of mail art, or an item that will be sent out for delivery.

Department of the Interior.  Craft an item for use or decoration around your home.

Right in the feels.  Craft an item that has special meaning to you, or that is inspired by an important event in your life.

RED ALERT!
From time to time a special alert prompt may be issued and must be completed in the time frame indicated.  Each alert prompt may only be submitted one time.

CLOSED: March:  Pi Day.  In celebration of Pi Day on March 14, craft an item that is inspired by Pi the symbol, the number, the meaningwherever your inner nerd takes you.  Post your Pi Day Alert projects by the end of the day on March 31st.

---Research Project Lab---

--Research Projects are more time-consuming than challenges and battles.  There is no hard and fast rule on how many hours a project should take, because speed and difficulty levels are too subjective.  What we are really looking for is a project that will be a personal challenge to you.
--Research Projects are projects that take 3 or more weeks to complete.
--Projects that do not take the allotted time of crafting will not be counted as complete; keep that in mind when you post your completed Research Projects.  If you finish your project earlier than expected, then craft an additional item(s) that correspond with your Research.  Add notes on how you finished earlier than expected and details about your additional crafting in your Completed Project post.
--Research Projects can be anything that takes up at least 3 weeks of crafting time.
--You will earn 100 points for each Research Project.
--You can earn Bonus Points for Research Projects.
--Research Projects must be proposed before starting so that Gamemakers can track timeline and encourage your successful completion.  In your proposal, you will give details on what your plan is and how it will take the allotted time to complete.
--If your Research Project is a surprise, such as swap project, you may submit your Research Plan to the Head Gamemaker via PM.
--You may propose a Research Project any time.  Any unfinished projects will carry over to the next season's Nerd Battles/Games.
--You can only have one Research Project going at a time.
--If you decide to abandon a Research Project, notify the Gamemakers, and they will erase that log from their records.  Once you have submitted to have a Research Project erased, you can propose a new one.

---HOW TO COMPLETE A RESEARCH PROJECT ---
1. Select what project you would like to complete.  You may only do one Research Project at a time so select carefully.
2. Propose what you plan on doing for your Research Project.  You may do this by posting in this thread or by PM to your Head Gamemaker.  When making a Research Project Proposal, please use the header below, and make sure you give details such as methods using, materials using, plan of action, timeline.  These details will help us cheer you on and inspire future Research Projects.
3. Begin work on your project.  Feel free to add progress pics in the Nerd Battles/Games Discussion thread.
4. Once your project is complete, post a picture of your project in this thread; make sure to use the Completed Research Project Header provided below.
---GOOD LUCK!---

---RESEARCH PROJECT PROPOSAL HEADER---
Use this header when proposing a Research Project.

The Spring Nerd Battles are OPEN!

This is the home for Completed Projects, Research Project Declarations, and "Ooos & Ahhhs."

For discussions, chatting, and progress pics, head over to the Nerd Battles Discussion.  Posts will be moved to appropriate threads when necessary.  Thanks for your help in keeping the Nerd Battles in order!

There is SO MUCH to do in the games.  Do not feel like you have to craft everything!  Think of the Nerd Battles as a "Choose Your Own Adventure."  Craft what inspires you, but don't try to do everything and get burned out.
Keep in mind the wise words of Mistress Jennie, "It does not do to dwell on lists and forget to craft."

Have fun!  And stay tuned as more challenges will be posted each month.

Now let's ROCK!
